Tits For your Time

So the 14 year-old boy wants a gaming computer.  He's more interested in the fantasy Assassins Creed/Minecraft style of gaming.  Well the Gift-getting season is upon us and I'd like some sage/cynical advice to what I should get the guy.  Bonus:  Each useful insight into what I should purchase (i.e., price, specs, reputable sites, useful additions, and other things I am too ignorant of knowing what to ask), will garner tits.  Sorry Ladies, I have to hit the demographic that can identify with a 14 year-old boy...{oh, the kid TOTALLY deserves it.  I consider myself honored to share DNA.}

Yes!  I was drawing a blank on the whole Secret Santa thing this year.

A real gift should drag him far away from his joy stick. Best present I got as a kid, one of the few that wasn't rewrapped for the less fortunate, was an astrolabe. Taught me trigonometry at 13. Also taught me how to escape the cretins who called themselves kin.

It is the begging of the search, but I am hoping for the $1,500 range, but that can be adjusted by about $500 if necessary.  I would think that a desktop would be more reasonable than a laptop at this time.  Op.  Thanks for the most basic of questions.  For you, tits...

Oh Wilber, if that is the type of gaming you like to play with your 14 year-old son, I guess I should expect a serial killer from your neck of the woods in about 10 years...

$1500 bucks is real money. You could get a hell of a gaming machine from ibuypower.com (Like Alienware, but 1/2 the cost)for that kind of scratch and still have enough for copies of Skyrim and Far Cry 3. Maybe even a gaming laptop, easily portable and useful for stalking dear old Dad around the sketchy fringes of the interwebs, like here.

Or the same money could get him a broken, used, stupid fast go cart, a toolbox full of tools and a book on building carts. What 14 yo boy doesn't want that?

Don't forget to budget for the Playboy subscription, something every 14-15yo boy needs, even if he has the internets.

Not sure where you are from but, Our local strip club has some incredible VIP packages for the holidays. Any 14 year old would love some of the girls we have there. If you are interested let me know, I will set it up for you.

In the $1500 range, we could all 3 have a very nice time and probably get to take home leftovers.

Reminds me when my dad had 'that sex discussion' with me.  He said, 'son, you get some girl pregnant and I'm kicking you out'.  He was a real sentimentalist.

Good idea! Get him all the parts in a big box along with a soldering iron and an anti-static mat and instructions on how to count from 0 to F. You'll save enough to replace any parts he mangles plus a large collection of games to lure him onwards.

If the kid wants a gaming computer he's obviously possessed of more sophisticated tastes than would be satisfied by the X-box's accent on gun-games for 12-year-old boys. Worse yet (besides being riddled with advertising), it doesn't support blue-ray, so all the great games one can play on PCs and PS3s have to be shortened (maybe the 12-year-olds don't mind but I would).

Oh to do the ol' Heath Kit computer from RadioShak circa 1978...Nah, I've the scratch to buy a computer and I d rather set the thing up with him and give him the 21st Century version of "The Talk."  That being, avoid the phrase "High Street" at all costs...  You know, parameters...

I like the alienware and HP links.  When evaluating prices, I could get the kid a sweet ride for a grand.

Again, thanks for your time and consideration...

Altogether 3 votes for IBuyPower.

About a year ago I got one.  6 core i7/Sandy Bridge, 16GB, 2TB, GTX560 for about $1650.  CPU and maybe memory are overkill for a gaming machine, but I'd upgrade the graphics card.  I'd go with an I5/8GB and maybe a GTX670 (or AMD equivalent).

CAVEATS.  When I bought mine from NewEgg, almost 10% of them were getting RMAed.  Make sure the return policy is comprehensive.  Also, open the case and make sure nothing is loose before you turn it on.  Mine had a fan which had not been installed and was sitting on the mobo.  Loose cards and connections seem to be common when these things ship.

Also, if you can get a comprehensive warranty, do it.  They use cheap power supplies (mine blew in 8 months) and probably cheap memory (though I've never had an issue).  The important stuff (mobo, CPU Graphics Card) is all industry standard.

Wow, 14 year stripp... oh wait, I misread that.

Nonetheless, it's cheaper than Vegas (actually it's cheaper than Florida) and you have peaked my interest sir.

I have a total of 7 of their machines, 6 laptops and a tower. All are still running. One power supply has burned out along the way, but I got a replacement at the thrift store for $5.  The first laptop is so old it has a parallel port on the back and the newest one just got delivered on Friday.

But I agree with oppie: Burn that thing in hard for a week when you get it. I always bought mine custom direct from IBP. Stay way from Alienware unless you need the +P+ power. And don't forget to go only with an SSD. It's money well spent.

But if you want it by Christmas, time is running out. They aren't fast to build and ship.

They're correcting that little issue but not in time for Christmas: http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57551 … box-world/

Personally, I have an Alienware Laptop that blows the shit out of everything else out there.  Unfortunately Dell owns Alienware now, but they don't seem to have fucked up the company or the computers yet.

Solid analysis and well referenced.  It is greatly appreciated.

The Boy understands that this gift falls under the GiftGetting Season/BirthdayGetting Season Edict in which one sacrifices one Getting Holiday to boost the other.  Having a February birthday means he doesn't have "too" long to wait, but it won't come until February.  I'm hoping on post-GiftGetting sales to make it even sweeter.  Keep the info coming and I'll keep on providing TFYT.  Shit.  Do you realize how many pictures of tits there are on the Internet?

I was on the road and my hp laptop commited suicide.  I used it for some actual work related stuff, so i had to have another.  Unfortunately, the only place in town to get one was wal-mart.

So, i went there and they were removing all the win 7 machines and replacing them with win 8.  I wasn't about to buy a wn 8 POS.  So, they sold me the last win 7 box they had, which was 64 bit.

It's a dell and it is actually a very good computer.  It cost me about $500.

I also put Linux Mint on it and it frigging screams.
