I'm almost through the first season, and I give this a rousing endorsement -- especially if you're over sixty, and old enough to get a nostalgia hit from the intricately and accurately crafted settings from late fifties urban America. I think this series is loosely based on the life of Joan Rivers, but I mostly base that on watching Brosnahan's comedy routines.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

https://s33.postimg.cc/7y8tk8jov/MMM_101_02185.1.FNL_-827a1b7.jpg

Definitely hunt this one down and watch it. IMDB currently rates it a 9, and it deserves every point.

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is set on New York's Upper West Side in the late 1950s, where a privileged Jewish housewife, Miriam "Midge" Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), lives with her lousy husband Joel (Michael Zegen), an aspiring comedy writer. But when he leaves her for another woman, Midge decides to take a crack at her own stand-up ambitions, with the help of Suzie (Alex Borstein), a no-nonsense bartender at a comedy club.

The days of usenet hosting a useful video archive are over but Amazon appears to have left Mrs. Maisel's pilot standing. Nothing else, though.

The early 60s NYC it depicts is not nearly tacky enough, way too disinfected, theatrical and quiet, entirely missing the stink. Sherman-Palladino faithfully mimics Rivers' voice, though, god help us all. Why not just icepick our eardrums?

I don't think it's supposed to be naturalistic or particularly realistic; it's highly stylized and sanitized. Sort of like the television of the day.

Detectorists

https://s33.postimg.cc/hgqj7kf2n/The-_Detectorists-700x388.jpg

Detectorists (as they inform us early in the first episode) are people who use metal detectors to survey the landscape in search of things of value.

I'm through most of the first season of this British comedy gem (IMDB rates it 8.7 at the moment), and enjoying myself immensely. It's British humor -- so dry your lips might crack -- but the laughs, while not rib splitting or side slapping, are there. As are the subtle, and often poignant, insights into human nature.

Three seasons are available, of six (half hour) episodes each. I found these episodes available in open directories, as well as via P2P sharing. If you have trouble locating them send me a PM, and I will assist you.

Joan says in clip above she's from Larchmont, NY but in fact she didn't move there until she was 17, in 1950, 20 years into an exodus of prosperous jews north out of NYC. Many of their new goyem neighbors were horrified and fled to CT, both sets of my grandparents among them. The shtetl patois you hear in Rivers' voice drove them batshit.

fnord probably knows something about this.

Four Seasons in Havana

https://s31.postimg.cc/it3dtgbbf/four-seasons-in-havana.jpg

I watched the first of four stories this evening which make up this mini-series, and was very impressed. Moody, somber, film noir set in a communist country, with better character development than you usually get from the cop show. Beautifully filmed, and with a memorable soundtrack. I recommend.

You can read a brief summary and review here: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/reviews/ … ns-havana/

I found my copy using torrent P2P sharing. I was NOT able to find this series in any open directories, however, it is available on Netflix. Four ninety minute episodes, in Spanish, with English subs.

I'm sure you're probably right. Between reading the subs, and gawking at the cute redhead, I think I simply glossed over that.

Also, I think the last time I actually saw anyone of either sex in a girdle was my mom, in about 1964, So probably it's simply my inability to interpret the clues.

If you actually speak Spanish (versus me, who simply knows a few of the common words and phrases) then that frees your eyes up to see a lot more of what's on the screen. That's something I forget about with sub-titled film; you miss a lot of the visual story because of the need to read.

If you love film making, don't miss this one; it's a stunning piece of cinematography. On the IMDB description page it notes that "The film received a six-minute long standing ovation after its screening at the Cannes Film Festival". Watch it and you'll see why. It reminded me a little bit of Scorsese's After Hours, except Good Time isn't a comedy, Additionally, Robert Patterson's in the running for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in this gem:

The Nile Hilton Incident

https://s18.postimg.org/4b48r5aix/11nilehilton-master768.jpg

The Nile Hilton Incident won five awards this week at the Swedish Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film is an exotic ride, and it will take you into a completely foreign word for a couple of hours. I found it to be fascinating.

"A political thriller based on a true story. Weeks before the 2011 Egyptian revolution, Noredin (Fares Fares), a police officer in Cairo's corrupt system, investigates the murder of a famous club singer at the Nile Hilton Hotel. What initially seems to be a crime of passion turns into something that concerns the very power elite of Egypt. Upon realizing this, Noredin decides to break the rules in order to obtain justice, colliding not only with the system but also with himself." (synopsis pinched from Rotten Tomatoes)

Gomorrah

https://s17.postimg.org/4dkbgd9b3/Gomorra_All_Star_orizzontale.jpg

Gomorrah is a thrilling, highly rated, edge of your seat crime series from Italy, and it's loosely based on real events. The IMDB rating (currently 8.7) puts it in rarefied company with the likes of Breaking Bad and The Wire. Be warned; THIS IS A VERY VIOLENT TV SERIES -- give it a pass if you have trouble with that sort of thing.

The production values for all aspects of the show are the best; this is an extremely well done drama.

...Gomorrah is a 2014 Italian television crime drama series. It is based on the book Gomorrah by Roberto Saviano and the film Gomorrah directed by Matteo Garrone. It is set in the suburbs of Naples, focusing on organized crime and the relationships of gangsters, drug dealers, and ordinary people. Gomorrah depicts street-level crime and its hierarchical organization from the pavement up to the office chair, and giving an audience a story about external and internal power struggles between criminals and delinquents.

I stumbled on this article yesterday, about an Australian film called Goldstone:

https://www.thedailybeast.com/goldstone … tern-movie

It turns out that Goldstone is the sequel to Mystery Road, a 2013 film by the same director, and one of the few Australian films which I really liked a lot. I watched Goldstone last night, and thought it was excellent. Well worth the ride for the remarkable scenery alone, but it's also a well crafted drama and thriller (see article).

If you liked last year's Oscar nominated Hell or High Water, I'm pretty sure you will also like both of these gems.

i recommend both films, and I found links to each in open directories. Send me a PM if you would like me to forward those. They are available via torrent as well, of course.

I'm only a couple of episodes into this, but I'm hooked and in for the ride -- at least through the first season. I usually skip Sci-Fi, but if the writing is good enough...

Nothing redeeming so far as I can tell, but a well orchestrated spy/thriller/action melodrama -- with solid production values and a good cast. It's easy to find online (send me a PM if you want an open directory link), using P2P sharing or...the last few episodes of the season are still being broadcast on Starz.

Collateral

https://s18.postimg.cc/ggs7q0kll/collateral.png

Collateral is a four-part British television drama serial, written and created by David Hare. The series, described by Hare as "a police procedural without any of that police attitudinising", stars Carey Mulligan as Kip Glaspie, a detective inspector assigned to investigate the murder of a pizza delivery driver who is gunned down in a London suburb. The ensuing story explores a complex web of characters who are all somehow connected with the story. Nathaniel Martello-White stars as Glaspie's partner, detective sergeant Nathan Bilk. Jeany Spark, Nicola Walker, John Simm and Billie Piper (of Doctor Who fame) are also credited as principal members of the cast.

I'm half way through this, and enjoying the ride. Fabulous cast, great writing and top notch production values.

Once upon a time, when studios leaked like sieves and major ISPs still hosted usenet binaries [until 2007], new seasons of popular productions routinely dropped all episodes in one binge deluge.

The first time I watched this film I had to stop it in the middle to catch my breath. I laughed so hard my sides ached and I nearly passed out from lack of oxygen.

Years later, my brother watched it at my suggestion. He and his young son laughed so hard they nearly passed out while watching it. His wife and daughter sat through the entire film stone faced and never laughed once. I don't think it has anything to do with gender; more likely personality.

Not everyone, it seems, is ready to embrace Mr. Hulot's (or Mr. Tati's) reality. Best in full screen. No subs needed because there is essentially no dialogue. You can save a copy with a stream capture program if you wish:
