This weasel proclaims gutliness since he fought the charges because his wife lied (such an original defense).  However, from there to a headline shouting  "claims he has guts because he smacked his wife around"  is one hell of a stretch.

and even if the charges were trumped up it just shows his complete inability to judge character in marrying her in the first place.

Bennett denied beating his wife and appealed. But the Maine Supreme Judicial Court upheld his conviction, finding that “the court did not commit clear error or abuse its discretion in excluding irrelevant evidence at trial,” and that “sufficient evidence does exist in the record to support his conviction.”
