Stephen Fry had a series where he visited each of the states. He visited a body farm in Tennessee, I think. Grim and fascinating at the same time.

The first "body farm" is in Knoxville, TN. I understand that law enforcement people from all over the world have praised this research to the skies. It's improved their ability not only to pinpoint time of death, but even sometimes cause of death, in the long-undiscovered corpses of victims.

An absolutely fascinating read is Mary Roach's "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" which "gives firsthand accounts of cadavers, a history of the use of cadavers, and an exploration of the surrounding ethical/moral issues. She places each chapter's content into a historical context by discussing the history of the method of using a cadaver she is about to witness."
Roach is a fabulous writer, to begin with. I was introduced to her work, particularly this book, by a cops reporter I used to work with.
