Straight people never have to change the gender of the partners in discussions at work because they fear being harassed or fired from their job for being heterosexual. And what special treatment are gays demanding? The right to hold a job? The right to visit their partners in hospitals? The right be a part of their children's lives? The right to contribute to society?
When the larger society isolates, condemns, and attacks you for one of the most basic, integral aspects of your identity, you're gonna celebrate what makes you different. Especially when it annoys the hell out of those who condemn you.
