They outlawed functional keyboards on cell phones.  I'm half temped to just go with voice typing and live with the fucked up auto-correct.

I went from Blackberry to Windows Phone and now I just bought a Caterpillar S41 - it works well but Android is just annoying in a shareware kind of way.

And the phone is basically indestructible.  It's also nice to be toting around a manly phone not a delicate piece of feminine accessory.

It's also a great "Dad" phone as with its' 5k battery it has a battery charging app to charge the wife/kids phones up after they drain them in the most inconvenient of location possible.

Root it to eliminate bloatware?

Actually it didn't come with bloatware, didn't even come with ringtones.  It's a Cat phone and about as basic as you could want.

My son's Cat phone has the thermal imaging and laser measuring function built in along with a few other.  I don't even have a bubble level built into mine, I have to download one.  It is a guy phone after all and it is a caterpillar and you can't get it via a service provider.

But how would rooting it help - I'm unclear on the benefits.

Rooting is only helpful to you if it is a locked carrier implementation of Android full of unremovable bloatware and background services that can not be shut off.

Well we avoided that problem.  I love the phone and Android at the core seems to be very good.  But the shareware is beyond annoying and has my risk sensors pinging off all the time.

I do have an odd bluetooth problem with my Savi 700 but whatever, it's a Linux derivative and polishing is is not included in that OS.  Google is fucking everywhere on that thing though so how do I make them go away and leave me alone?

Well Melons is having that problem on her Samsung.  I should probably root it and kill the bloatware, etc that is draining her battery.  Any linkage to a good site for guidance?

Speaking as someone who doesn't own a phone (I just borrow my mom's 9-year-old flipphone because I don't make calls):

While I've often thought the iOS ecosystem was superior (and apps are better vetted), I've heard that the Android system varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and updates don't come uniformally. It's like if Microsoft Surface machines got updates first, then HP, then Dell would tinker around with them, and Acer would be the last to apply them.
