"I had dinner with my parents, Batman, and Wonder Woman last night" is vastly different from "I had dinner with my parents, Batman and Wonder Woman last night".

You're right. English deviations from mother tongue to its far-flung former subjects are minor.

I found Spanish dialects from Mexico to Panama largely incomprehensible anywhere outside major cities.
