My parents are using peanut butter slathered on the outside of a metal can, which is suspended over a bucket of water. There's a board serving as a ramp to the top. They go for the peanut butter and wind up in the drink.
When they realized the mice didn't drown right away, they started adding anti-freeze.

Until recently I always had cat(s) keep the mice out of the place and catch the ones that come in, don't know the policy here.
I had mices in my blocked up chimney when I moved in 5 years ago - I could hear them - but they kept to themselves and I tried to ignore them. All that changed in November, when Cat & Mouse became one pissed human against the marauding hoard following last fall's record acorn/mousie blowout. When sea birds perched in the towering oaks behind my house this fall, the added weight was enough to pelt the roof with honest to god artillery fire.
Landlady nixed the cat idea for all the usual reasons but I'll wear her down eventually, I hope.

I have a Cat named Kalamazoo. Nothing smaller than him survives in this house, if I see a single rodent dropping I stop feeding him.

If the end result is death, speed === humane. So the old spring trap is great as long as you are not a booger and bait it with something that can be licked or pulled off. A gristly bit of bacon rind always seems to work for me, clamped tight in the metal clip. I lose one or two baits per mouse caught, but I've never had to deal with more than a couple that move inside for the winter and generally shag off when the weather improves.

I've been using two of these baited with peanut butter for years. They're easier to open when disposing of the dead mice than the old victor snap traps.
