Ahimsa is the highest Dharma, Ahimsa is the highest self-control,
Ahimsa is the greatest gift, Ahimsa is the best practice,
Ahimsa is the highest sacrifice, Ahimsa is the finest strength,
Ahimsa is the greatest friend, Ahimsa is the greatest happiness,
Ahimsa is the highest truth, and Ahimsa is the greatest teaching.

As a person who adopted this philosophy whilst quite young, I was deeply surprised to find out that MLK, the penultimate advocate for Ahimsa back when in the USA, had a concealed carry permit supposedly because of threats to his family and himself from Racist Assholes. After having found that out, I realized that I really had just glossed over the notion of self & community defense within the teachings.

It certainly changed my perspective.

It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

Do you think that MLK was wrong in wanting to defend family and his self?

Not at all.  Despite our differences, I have not once actually suggested that no one should have guns ever.

Same.  I just don't want them in the hands of violent nutjobs.
