Dispatch from the front -No one will be allowed a free hall pass.

For over a century, the Haskell Free Library and Opera House has stood as a powerful symbol of unity and cross-border friendship—one of the only buildings in the world that quite literally connects two nations. This sudden closure not only limits off Canadian visitors from their shared history and threatens the very spirit of collaboration that has defined this institution for generations.

We refuse to let a border divide what history has built together. Join us to raise your voice and take action to protect this irreplaceable piece of our collective heritage.

Beyond the cultural and historical loss, this forced closure demands costly and unnecessary infrastructure overhauls to meet new border restrictions, placing an undue burden on both the library and the community it serves. These overhauls also need approval from both historical societies in both countries.

Use of funds:

We are tasked of creating a Canadian only entrance to this historical building, which includes

Creation of parking lot with reduced mobility spots
Reduced mobility access ramps and entrance
Proper building entrance to the facility

I despise these times. I spent my early childhood in Canada. I loved it there, and the people I met.

Canada is one of the great 1st world democracies. Though it is disparate in views and needs by Proveice and city. Nor have Canadians escaped being hammered each generation by economic downturns and difficulties particular to the Provinces. Intermingling with Canadians when young taught me much about what it takes to be happy in place and what family and community connections mean.

I can still summon up befuddlement at observing Newfoundlanders. In such a frigid and economically restricted existence how can they be so fun loving and happy. It is ingrained in many young adults to this day. It was just a few decades ago they suffered severe economic collapse of the natural resource harvesting.  Forced migration occurred as the Canadian Government removed people from their desperate villages into the cities in an attempt at creating industrial economies.

I know Canadian Gen X and Millennials who took part in the mobile growth of modern cities and what Canadian universities and technical arts programs offered. Quite a few of them who worked for American companies with subsidiaries or partners in Canada, acquiring work visas and green cards. The most recent overhaul of TN NAFTA Visa program for Canadians is unique amongst our system for work permits. It has truly allowed for collaboration and spurred Canadian professionals to live and work in the US for 3 year terms that can be renewed or allow them to switch employer. There has been quite the cross pollination of talented, or just people who acquired specialties with much to offer. Not just the elites of the tech world.

These Canadians are now are seriously worried.

Even green card friends count their lucky stars they maintained Canadian healthcare tax status all these years, knowing that if and when they really need support for serious conditions or extended care, they can return to Canada as needed. Or just return to care for aging family.
