A Roman Catholic priest (even if technically he is an ex-priest) is a pedophile, what a surprise.  Pedophiles tend to be deeply religious, conservative, middle aged men.  He has two of those three characteristics.  I would blame his being a priest, not his liberalism for his pedophilia.  Most parents I know won’t allow their children to be alone with a Roman priest or monk, but aren’t especially worried about liberals.
