People who own dogs have to take them outside for walks. This brings the owner into contact with other people and the outside world, reducing any neurotic tendencies. Also, dogs strive to endear themselves to the people they live with, reducing the odds they will be neglected.

Hell, my neighbor has more than 100 dead animals in his house. But they are mostly stuffed, though a few are flayed and layed on the sofa or floor or tacked to the wall. Taxidermy is an interesting hobby.
