I lived in Australia for nearly two years (roughly 20 years ago). Gorgeous place, lovely people (at least to a white woman [at least to her face]).
I can't understand how Aussies in large numbers can be getting obese. I've tasted Aussie food.

On the subject of food, as I'm little qualified to discuss much else in this story (not that that's ever stopped me before), culinary Australia has been experiencing changes very similar to that of California. Australians are experimenting with new flavors and focusing on lighter, local ingredients and drawing heavily on Asian cuisines for their inspiration.
Apparently the chefs are, at any rate.

First we fattened the Germans, and you did not speak out - because you weren't German.
Then we fattened the French, but you did not speak out - because you weren't French.
Then we fattened the Japanese, and you did not speak out - because you weren't Japanese.
Finally your ass is the one that begins to swell - and there is no one left to point and laugh at you.

I was there for about two weeks in 1994. New Zealand was a much more hospitable place. I gotta give the lovely people award to the Kiwis.
Now, had you said, "Beautiful People", I could have agreed. Every last one of them is Beautiful People. Buncha future dwelling Beautiful People.
