Just wanting to provide an opportunity for everyone to get up-to-date on Darwin's selections for the year, so far.

Rescuers said the group could have survived had they been properly equipped...'They set off at 3am on Monday.  They were poorly prepared and by 3pm that afternoon they were stranded and lost...were unable to give us their precise position...They had no tent and did not dig a snow-hole to protect themselves...'

I do enjoy a story with a happy ending.

The majority of the Darwin submissions are complete crap - we do a better job here.

I vote for a Darwin sticky

Hell, emma, we barely use the stickies we've got.  There's children in China without any threads at all, and here you are asking for more stickies.  Don't you feel ashamed of yourself?

The peak claims the lives of about 50 climbers every year.

This can't be right. That is a a fantastic amount of deaths. Mt Blanc must hold some sort of lemming like magical attraction for stupid europeans.

I say when someone comes that close we should just kill them.  There's no reason to cheat him out of the award.

"...there was a huge explosion which possibly vaporised the tool he was using."

Yeeoow.  But I think the real tool was the one holding it.

"Deputy assistant coroner Melanie Williamson recorded that Mr Roberts died as a result of misadventure."

It makes it sound so innocent and pleasant that way, doesn't it?  Misadventure.  I love it.  It sounds so much better than "died as a result of being a complete prat."

Personally, I think the whole "stupid criminals" section of the DAs should be its own genre. How often are these just drug-addled thieves who concoct crazy schemes to get their next fix? People driven by desperation (drug-fueled or no) don't necessarily rank with the hare-brained "daredevils" who put their heads on railroad tracks or play chicken with grizzlies. If so, then is it not the drug abuse that got them the Darwin, and not the intervening circumstances that got them killed?

The next time someone asks me how many Taliban it takes to screw in a lightbulb, I'll know the answer.

One man was killed and another was critically injured last night when their heads struck a freeway overpass while on the upper deck of a bus headed to the Washington Nationals baseball game, D.C. police said.

The incident occurred about 8:45 p.m., as the open-topped double-decker bus, which was westbound on the Southeast Freeway, passed beneath the 11th Street overpass.

"They were standing in the upper part of the bus, and their heads struck the under part of the overpass," said Cmdr. Andy Solberg, field supervisor for the police. (laugh more)

Darwin 1, Washington Nationals 0.
