Just after I put new wheels and tires on it. I have since repainted it, and put new suspension in, adding 2". I bought it just after Gulf War I, and of course being in my 20s I didn't have shit for money to fiddle with it back then.

So did mine when we moved to Peru. The same car was still purring in 1970 when I visited the neighbor who bought it.

My kids want me to get one. You must be a fucking sasquatch. I am 6'2" and I actually had to move the seat up a notch or two when I tried one out.

It wasn't how far the seat went back, it was the narrowness of the peddle well. That being said Melons loves the car and since she's gone back to driving a stick shift the stupid little fender benders have gone away.

Ugh.
I am not in the market for a car. I just have this propensity to look around once in awhile. Was checking out some older Acura's and apparently sometime after 2000 everyone that bought an Acura began to buy fucking automatics. I found a lovely little number that has low miles for the year and is a six speed. Priced many thousands below KBB. Lovely little piece of machinery.
Too bad it is in fucking Milwaukee. Ship or fly and drive? 15 hours doesn't sound like my idea of a fun road trip.

Just bought one of these babies off an old chinaman. Cost me over 3k but well worth it for an original (save for the stick which is aftermarket - I've got my eye's open for something authentic but sticks are getting pricey these days). She's working great at the moment, but I'm a bit worried she might slow down a bit when the snows come.

This is a car thread, so I have a car question.
Either the blower motor or the blower motor resistor went out in my car. Before I get shoulder-deep in behind the dash, is there anything else it could be? Something simpler (it's not the fuse), or something else that means my replacement motor and resistor won't fix it?
Offline
#537 2012-09-09 18:20:39
There's only a limited number of things it could be and they are all parts of the electric circuit that powers the motor. You didn't give any information on the age or make of the car, so if there's an automatic fan control tied to a thermostat then that would be a good place to leave your suicide note start. Try disconnecting and testing the switch first. If that's still working it's either a broken wire, a loose connector or frayed insulation causing a short. Whatever the case shoulder deep in the dash is where it lives so that's where you should be now.
I hope you have better luck than I usually do with vehicle wiring, most of my troubles have been of the 'intermittent' variety.

#538 2012-09-09 21:30:23
You're a good man.
2007 Mazda 3. Great little car. I've had the "intermittent" thing too. I got through the summer with a bunch of fuses; so long as I didn't start the car with the blower on max I was good.
The problem is that there are so many possible shorts between the alternator and the blower motor that I could gut this fuckor for days and not find the problem.
I just don't want to swap in a new blower and resistor and still be back at square one.
Offline
#539 2012-09-10 00:32:55
Hmm... don't suppose it could be that the motor is just duff? Blowing fuses when putting it on 'max' leads me to think that the motor itself has issues... internal short, bad brushes, dry or spent bearings, etc.

Most people make the mistake of leaving all of the vehicles electronics on when they shut down the systems (turn off the car) and follow that up by jumping in and cranking the motor before the systems have fully powered back up. The result is inconsistent amperage to the components at restart and the obvious resulting damage.
In modern cars there is usually one consolidated switch block, usually right above the steering wheel, they are fairly cheap and usually easy to replace; a bit difficult to get to but manageable.
More importantly turn off everything before killing the motor and allow the vehicle to power up fully before cranking the motor. This isn't a toaster, it's a complex machine that even with modern technology requires a bit of operator discipline.

Lit claims that it's a 2 passenger vehicle "the C-1 has enough space for an adult passenger and a small bag, or about the same amount of cargo you can carry on a plane." They haven't released any interior shots yet.
90% of my drive time is just me and the work bag (16.5" laptop). At less than 20K after tax breaks, an average range of 200 miles, a 100 mph top speed and the safety and creature comforts they're claiming... well it's certainly interesting.
Questions remain. The gyroscopic flywheel system is really cool but there aren't any details on weight/spin. I wonder how they've dealt with catastrophic failure. The airbags are a nice touch but I wonder just how survivable this vehicle is on a scale of motorcycle to Yugo.

Holy shit! The Lit is actually pretty cool! I'm with Opsec when it comes to wondering what happens when the gyros fail though. I'm just imagining the driving public with little to no experience with motorcycles driving them like a car when they do fail. They can make them as solid as they want, but it's still mechanical and everything mechanical fails at some point.

That's our new standard of comfort and room? I already get 50+ mpg out of my 4 door Jetta and I can put 5 friendly adults in it plus another 3 kids in the trunk.
The one thing these micro cars and electric vehicles never mention is that they either don't have AC or don't get half of the rated distance when using AC. While the AC will knock maybe 10% off of a modern cars mileage, on electric cars they seem to eat up a much higher percentage of the charge. Do you want to be zipped into that thing without AC on your way to work? You might as well drive a scooter and get wet from time to time.
But it still looks like fun. I would cover mine with EL wire.

I don't know how often you've actually done this, but barring a cramped orgy, 5 adults in a Jetta wouldn't be friendly for long. The kids would be done to medium rare at about 3 hours at highway speeds. They cook much faster if you wrap them in foil and lay them on the manifold. I also view your mpg statistics with a jaundiced eye, unless you were that motherfucker doing 55 mph in the left lane ALL THE WAY TO FLORIDA.

I'm not one to argue that being without AC sucks. I need a new evaporator unit... a total dash tear down. Also, I will never again buy a silver car with a black leather interior.
But I'm off point. This has a 200 mile range. If AC or heat takes 25% you're still getting 150 miles. The Nissan Leaf only has a 100 mile range in conservative mode.
I'm less impressed with the fact that it's electric than I am that it's efficient .

I'm all for efficiency. And I care little about comfort, so I rarely use my AC either, especially now that my diverter door on my AC is stuck so the best I get is warmed over AC. But it's a 1998 Jetta TDI (The last year before they hamstrung it with every electrical "convenience ever invented) and is quite comfortable with 4 adults and a teenager. Maybe not for a 1000 mile road trip and probably not for your typical corn-fed Suburban driver, but it sure fits a lot more than a Prius and gets 10% better mileage. I just checked Fuelly.com and my average over the last 12k was 44.3 with about 70% of my driving being medium length suburban errands. It was better, then I had some injection pump timing issues and a broken timing belt and I wasted a lot of diesel in my driveway. But I just rolled over 300k and some maintenance is par for the course.
So I'm all for maximizing efficiency. I just don't think the way to do it is to wrap a nacelle around a small motorbike and try to sell it to the masses. Build a car that that has space enough for the typical user, an efficient engine with a whopping big turbo on it and teach people to drive smoothly. You don't need gimmicks to do that.
