Stickers cost more than the car I'll bet. Especially that big hood badge.

ABS mainly helps by allowing you to steer if you brake hard enough to lock up the front "panic braking."  It also makes stops shorter in hard braking by keeping the rear from locking up.  Other than bad weather, or unusually hard braking it's not that big a deal.

The anti-lock brakes definitely don't work.  I locked up the rear tires the day before the rally when a jacked up F150 4x4 decided my lane looked like the place to be, to hell with the front half of my car.  In her defense she wanted to turn left and going straight would have cost her an extra two minutes.  I actually considered running under her rear tire, but decided I wanted to drive the damn thing the next few days.  I can't speak to the airbags, haven't done anything that would test them.

It's not fun to drive, but it's a runner.  The last 200 miles of so of the first day I kept up with the fast cars that had medium speed drivers.  My arms and shoulders were sore enough that I decided no more of that stupidity the second day.  If I'd had a co-driver instead of a navigator, and we'd pushed the whole time, we could have been in ahead of them, right behind the fast drivers.  We couldn't have touched the very fast drivers, I never do no matter what I'm driving.  Most of the fast cars passed me three times over 612 miles. Making fewer stops is a big help.  We got much better mileage, partly because I had to run more consistently, partly because I was keeping the revs down to try not to break it, mainly not having the horse power.

250,000+ miles 25 years old, Honda makes some reliable cars.

The Dustball stickers come with the Rally.  The stickers other than those cost about $170 or so.  The total budget was $1000 for the car, excluding brakes and tires.  I bought some of the vinyl on Ebay, some  on Aliexpress, some were things I had left over from years back.  The car was $600, $150 TTL. $30 on used parts from the junk yard, $180 is what I counted for the vinyl, but I didn't use it all, an oil change a bottle of power steering fluid.  The brakes and tires cost more than everything else combined.  I left a five star rating for the $39 tires on Wal-Mart.com.

Let's start with it's not a Skyline GTR (which aren't half-bad performance cars) and move on to it's just a modded and kitted commuter Skyline which are a dime a dozen in the USA fan-boi community.

{rant}People love to treat the Skyline GTR like it's some "Holy Grail" of motoring.  It's not.  There weren't that many and they weren't that great to anyone outside of the JDM fan-boi club.  Cool collector's item if you get an original numbers matching GTR; otherwise a rather boring era car overall lacking the mind numbing acceleration of some cars, the breath-taking top speeds of others or even the gut wrenching braking and handling of an Omni GLHS.{/rant}

True all dat, but someone took the trouble to send this beater over from Japan, likely as a 25 year old import to make it legal. I think the engine is the right one for the performance model and un-modded as far as I could tell.

Unsafe at any speed.

Handled beautifully, though.

You know as well as I do that was Ralph Nader making some political hay.  I once read an article that listed the autos that were more unsafe than a Corvair at that time.  But they were an easy punching bag with the rear engine and the simple suspension.  Unlike the VW Bug, with the exact same thing.

Ah those halcyon days of yore, when you could still make hay out of unsafe at any speed. Now the lawyers have that biz all wrapped up.

There will never be another vertical car carrier. I once watched Toyota shred 4000 cars on the dock in Portland after the transport ship went listing 25 degrees.  Took them almost a year and was done under armed guards. They could not afford for a single used part to leave the docks and get into the American market to be part of a lawsuit.

There is a fantastic piece of journalism about this event from the NYT. They focused on the Salvers to tell the story.

I was talking to someone at work about what kind of car he wanted, there were five times as many people as normal standing around in there.  One of the worst assholes I've ever worked with walked in right as I said "Oh no, DON'T buy a BMW."  Asshole puffs up and asks "Why not?  Why shouldn't he buy a BMW?"  "Because owning a BMW turns you into an asshole."  asshole slinks off to set his bags down as everyone else was laughing.

I actually think assholes buy them, it's possible to own one without being an asshole, but there's no humor in that.

I saw that little guy's big brother last night. Was walking along the edge chasing glimpses of the reborn crescent moon when I spied it lurking there, behind a hewn board fence carved in mostly strange waves.  Hidden, idling in an overgrown side lot. Gave me chills, I jumped with fright, like some sort of wicked rip in the cosmos, dark and still now, waiting for something to happen, someone to fall within.

Thanks for that - gave me a LOL-moment that scared the domestic help.

In other news, that fucking car got fucking stolen last fucking November, right from outside my fucking house at 2AM. I had it from new, paid roughly $43k AUD in 2002, now they're worth upto stupid money like $75k or worse.

Plan was to do its rebuild from the start of this year; what with having got through the worst of the new house, new job, kiddies well into their school-years bullshit, and an excellent mechanic on hand, I was going to get an engine and drivetrain rebuild finished by March (nothing outrageous, just a comfy 260-300kW off the block, aiming at great longevity and a smooth smooth torque curve that suits a daily drive) and by now the desperately sad bodywork would be getting its final clearcoat cut n polish.

Junior learned to drive manual (stick) in that car, and he was promised inheritance IF he still had a 100% pure driving record by the time he was legally old enough to drive it and financially stable enough to insure it with those mods at his age. Well, you've got to use some sort of leverage to keep your lad safe from stupid boy-racer behaviour in their late teens and 20's...

So after 6 months, I've finally settled into a Toyota 86 - it's probably the closest thing these days (suits my needs) but fark does it need more power. Definitely duller engine-wise than the stock Silvia was. The new GR86 looks like it'll solve the problems of the FR86 but I'm not keen to spend new-car money any more.

I WANT MY CAR BACK.

I needed a new second car and decided to lease this time.  Apparently, all the old "shit-box" cars are being converted to sports cars.  Case in point, the Honda Civic Sport.  It's fun to drive, has more electronics than the old space shuttles, and gets ~33mpg.  I get it out on the highways, put it in cruise control, and just steer until I get to my exit.  It auto brakes when I get cut off and tells me if I'm not doing a great job steering too.  If a fully autonomous driving vehicle is Level 4, this thing is somewhere between a 3.0 and 3.5.
