Even though I enjoyed reading that, I think I need some insulin now.

I love Mr. Rogers. He gave children something real that wasn't fast and flashy, wasn't commercial or stupid or secretly tricking them into buying something. He understood childhood was scary sometimes, and his reassuring voice was more than a lot of kids ever got anywhere else.

Hey, I once picked up a sweet Brazillian chick because I was whistling "Its a beautiful day" on the Metro one rainy day. "American men never whistle or sing" is what she said to me on the escalator and 30 minutes later we were going at it like meth addicted stoats in an empty office. So, Mr Rogers, I owe you one.

You know the truth is, after sifting through Youtube clips of Mr. Rogers, I've come to realize that I love him.  I love him in a much more personal way than any television personality.  When I was a little boy, watching his show, waiting for the little red trolley to show up, I really thought he was talking to me.  It's as if I'd stumbled across footage of a dead uncle that I'd loved as a boy, that I hadn't thought of in years, and that I'm only now wishing regretfully that I had visited more often.

You and the rest of the world.  I think it's because he was genuine.  He wasn't a temperamental asshole in real life; he didn't have a secret life where he liked to piss in prostitutes' mouths, etc.  He was a sincerely caring person.  He never even expressed disapproval of those Mr. Rogers parodies--he just said that it was humor for grownups and it was fine with him.

There are lot of people out there for whom Mr. Rogers was the most stable, most pleasant and most caring adult they were exposed to in childhood; and that is fucking tragic, but at least he was there for them.

For me, it's just good to know that it is possible for a man like Fred Rogers to exist in the world.

What's striking is watching the palpable hostility of the senator wilt in about six minutes. I'm not much of a sentimentalist, but this guy was special.

I knew a therapist who would give her adult clients homework -- watching Mr. Rogers episodes.
