Mr. Sofie just spent $44,000 of Miss Sofie's money on this guy:

It's gonna make money, so I shouldn't complain. It's just a lot of fucking money for something I'll never drive,

Well, as someone who HATES driving, I figure since Mr. Sofie drives a lot, he probably wants to be comfortable.  And sure there's other things you could spend the money on, but: (1) driving in an uncomfortable vehicle sucks (2) unfortunate, it takes about $40k to get a decent vehicle these days, and (3) it could have been much worse...at least he didn't lose his fucking mind and come home with a Porsche.

You have pretty high standards for "decent".  I can only wonder what you would spend for a "more than decent" vehicle...

Not being a dealer and not having bought a new car in about three years I can't give you the "out the door price" on what I'd look at.  But a fair example of a "decent" car I'd say would be a Honda Civic LX.  According to kbb.com people are paying under 18k for the 2007 automatic.  If I were getting a new Honda I'd probably opt for the 2008 Accord EX-L without the nav package and pay less than $30k.

I spent about $24,000 about 2 years ago for my Accord EX.  Judging by the MSRP (I'm not going to buy a new car to compare) it's about $3000 more for the 2008, and less if you don't get the EX.  I'd say if you're spending $40,000 for a "decent" sedan then you got rooked.

They pretty much tie the Camry as the most stolen vehicle everywhere.  I'd say that's pretty solid proof that they're decent cars, though.

Ah, well then I can see how parking a car that costs twice as much would leave you less likely to get your car stolen.

That is one odd definition of "decent"...

And the Accord?  Are you saying that you can't find a car that is comfortable on long drives for under $40k?  What car do you consider to be "decent" then?  Make and model.

I'm short, so I need a car with adjustable seats (up down) and a design where the dashboard is low.  I can drive other cars, obviously, but these are the features that make ME the most comforatable.  Right now I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee...cheap, very unglamorous and practical for hauling kids, groceries, and stuff, but the gas mileage sucks ass.  I got it when I didn't have to drive every day.   I've been testing cars because I really want to get rid of my Jeep.   The car that I've driven the most recently that was the most comfortable was an Audi A6, which was surprising because I don't like Audis, having had too many bad experiences with the Volkswagon line back in my younger days.

My last vehicle was an F-150, but it was only convenient as long as I lived in rural areas. When I moved to San Francisco, I was wracking up so many parking tickets I had to get rid of it. San Francisco Muni is getting to be a pain in the ass, though. I may have to break down and buy and motorcycle.

My former tennet has a sporty 2001ish civic. During a summer dinner hour last year on our family friendly suburban street a stranger walked up to his car parked in its usual spot out front and drove away with it. What galls me isn't that the neigbors were playing with the kids in the sprinkler directly across the street as they unloaded groceries, it was that I was sitting in plain view reading in my comfy chair  facing out the picture window towards the Honda.

My firend gets dropped off from work about an hour later to find me sitting in the same spot, walks in and goes, "Where's my car"? I respond, what do you mean I just looked at it out the window. Doh!

The cop says " em-mm, see this about twice a day in our town. Particuarily Hondas. Been going on for as long as he can remember" They just take an old worn honda key and it generally works by jiggling in a broken in Honda lock. Turns out he was right, but via the internets I learn that a regular blank key, sometimes slightly filed about a notch step, works even better.

The cop then reasuures us not to worry, we will probably get the car back in a day. They don't steal them to rob them, they just use it for commuting across the bay bridges.  The local cops find 1 or 2 abandoned cars a day from the East bay and the East bay cops find 1 or 2 of our towns cars left on their streets.

Sure enough 4 days later the Richmond cops call telling us to come pick up the car from their impound. The thief didn't even scratch it. Took the gearshift knob, the radio faceplate and the rearview mirror. Heck they actually left us presents. A change of clothes, a stack of business cards from a tattoo parlor in our town, and what probably was the thief's hip hop demo in the CD player and extra copies in his bag of laundry.

Police didn't have any intrest in following up, fingerprinting, or even logging this evidence to the report. They only intercept these guys when they pull a traffic stop.
