We actually just bought some again this weekend; the Samoan faction of our Rugby Club has turned us back onto it.

Frankly I only like it because it reminds me of the early MRE's

Didn't they retired those after WWII?  How old ARE you, Dhal?

The reason Samoans and other Pacific Islanders likes it is that it resembles long pig.  And Dhal is ancient.  You can tell by the albatross around his neck.

Never mind, I do not know shit.  1958 was a while after WWII.

Trivia:  You can apparently still buy them on Ebay.

Sadly, no. I tried one once issued during the Korean War, on a bet. The sort of bet where even if you win, you lose.

There was actually a really interesting documentary about Spam on the Discovery channel once.  I didn't realize that we hooked the Brits on it.

Easy enough to do when rations are a way of life.  Early 60's food stopped being rationed in the UK due to the problems caused by WW2.

For real. I use to get MRE's from my military buddies (early 90's) and they had shit like Chicken Ala King and shit.... with crackers and jelly and the whole 9 yards... no spam to be found...

God bless progress!!!

Are you kidding?

Have you seen the shit those folks eat?

Even worse, you have to try it. Some of it doesn't sound nearly as bad as it tastes.

I always heard about how "British sausage was so much better than American" only to find out that "better" means it was plain ground pig product with no flavor or seasoning of any kind whatsoever, at least that is how it tastes.... Pork pies, sausage rolls... yuk... whereas if you make a sausage roll using REAL sausage... yumm!!!

The army and national guard in Guatemala still had them in the early 1980s. I believe they were a gift of the U.S. military and/or CIA, or perhaps a left over of our participation in the revolution/coup in 1954.

The name changed several times along with the menu's.  They still made them up until 1980.

Of course us no-budget jar-heads were still eating them long after; the Army always got all the fancy stuff.

I love many things English, but in general their food is not amongst them.

Don't get me started on their meats - have you ever tried their 'corned beef'?   A New York Jew would want to start a 7-day war over it.  Bleech!
