No, not bonsaikitten. These "dioramas" or whatever they are were the work of a Victorian taxidermist. They used to be on public display and apparently the Vickies thought they were cute. I particularly remember a schoolroom scene using dozens of tiny dead baby rabbits, a dead puppy at play with a ball, and the dead kittens' tea party (the image you used). I'd just like to visit those nightmares again.

I found it through a plain ol' image search, but if you're into Walter Potter, then here you go.

You're welcome. I always found Potter's work rather unredeemably creepy. It was less the nature of his dioramas than the fact he seemed so bad at actual taxidermy. He regularly distorted the features of so many species, and then you've got those soulless little button eyes. It's hard to tell the difference between art and incompetence when the latter is so consistent and the former seems to exist in its own aesthetic vacuum.

As you said, not really practical to use the built-in polls. I did come up with some backend code to allow voting on banners, but my CSS-fu is too weak to get the user interface part right. I think an ideal layout would be for voting icons to appear when you move the mouse over a banner; something like this:
and clicking on one or the other registers a vote. This way it's unobtrusive most of the time. Anyone have a clue how to make this happen?
The current design of the backend registers a "pro" or "con" vote for each banner depending on which way you voted. This way we would have data not just on the net sentiment, but on the relative pro vs. con numbers as well as the total number of votes.
There is a record of IP addresses kept to discourage stuffing the ballot box; these expire after X days. No check is made whether a user is logged in or not, so guests can vote, too. This can be restricted to users only if desired.
The other part I haven't done is any way of actually viewing the results. The current banner page is very busy as it is so that doesn't seem like a good place to put them.

Can "current results of polling" be 'called' to the same post that reproduces newly added banners; i.e., refresh the page, and see new totals in that particular place?
As long as IP logging is active, registered users can't just log out and vote as many times as they want (we are, of course, anticipating a great deal more interest in "voting" than may actually exist). I wouldn't object to the functionality as long as it didn't affect my final say. Like what, f'rinstance, would happen if one banner had 49 votes For and 51 Against. That's not a significant enough difference to let users decide. Nor is a voting pool of fewer than 10 users/guests for a given banner. I just don't think there's enough interest in affecting the outcome of which banners display. Sort of an "if it ain't broke, don't waste five days trying to code a fix for it" proposition.
Personally, I think the effort could be better spent coming up with other features for the board. I'm not caffeinated enough to recommend too many at this juncture, but--short of returning in-built operations such as avatars and sigs--we might want to improve the existing poll functions, topic voting, add a WYSIWYG text editor, deauthorize certain kinds of HTML, etc. (I've seen a lot of raw code popping up in quoted posts and am not sure if it's just me/my usergroup, or this is an oversight of some kind).
Ultimately, I don't think we want to become a forum where our only "gimmick" is voting on banners. The banners are nice an' all, but they are not the whole purpose of this site. And I say this with the obvious bias I should have for our banners remaining fresh, interesting, and thematically relevant.

It's possible, but would require some surgery on the viewtopic page. It would generate a bunch of extra database lookups, which might hurt performance. Another way of doing it might be to display stats along with the pro/con icons when you hover over a banner - the database is already being hit for information when the banner loads, so the votes could be loaded at the same time.

My thinking was this would primarily be for entertainment value, and may or may not actually inform banner decisions. As for interest, I don't know if anyone would care or not. The fact that you're the only one who responded to my post may be an indicator.

I find it interesting. I haven't chimed in because I don't have anything to contribute to the technical end of the matter.
I think the ability to vote on banners might foster some healthy competition, which would result in quality.
Shit, when rcade added killfile ability to Cruel--and allowed users to see the list of the killfiled--a competition sprang up over that; some people actually took pride in being the most killfiled Cruelie. Top Poster Stats were also pretty popular.

You don't speak Dhalsense? I'm logging 20 hr days and I'm burnt by the time I arrive here.
In a perfect world, we'd have a fixed selection for the unwashed masses and allow registered users to toggle their own choices, with a running total of selected images. Short of that, anything that encourages participation is good... except for Fled, who's apparently sitting in for Princess Biscuit.

Right now there's no display for scores other than on the buttons themselves. I'll come up with some kind of report interface eventually.

With banners being as random as they're supposed to be, the inevitable desire to keep voting as they're reloaded is invariably curtailed by a warning that one has already voted on a particular banner, without bringing the user back to the original page. This is a flaw.

This was actually intentional, as I thought that if the error simply flashed up briefly before redirecting, people might not notice. You do have a point, the user might not be that concerned about it.
Probably the better behavior would be to predetermine whether the user has voted on a banner and disable the voting buttons. I'll see what I can do along those lines.

Well, with that many banners, there's almost no way people are going to remember which ones they voted for. Do we have a table for voting results--even if it's just to help me decide if some need to go--or is that too much to query?

OK, now the voting buttons are disabled if you've voted on a banner already. Thanks for the feedback, this is much better than hitting the user with an error.

Right now the only way is to manually query the database. As of a few minutes ago, these were the top twenty and bottom ten:
