That's it! We're having our convention at the Faubus Motel!

Yee. Haw.

You know what's weird?

Every last one of my Southern IRL friends are some of the most progressive thinkers I know.

But then again, they all escaped to come live here in Vegas.

Hands down, I couldn't think of a place I'd be less likely to stay, and I'm including La Quinta.

WARNING: It's rather unlistenable 50's "modern jazz" and the sound quality is AM-radio bad...

I have stayed in worse. At one place in Florida I walked out of my room really late at night (about 2:30 am) and found the owner of the motel sitting in my car listening to the radio. His was broken and he was bored he said.

At a place in Virginia right outside of DC I had a cooler full of beer in my room, Shipyard, a brand not easy to find in the DC area. I went sight-seeing downtown all day. When I get back I opened the cooler for a cold one and there were about 3 beers left. I went to the office to complain and the guy swore nobody had taken them. Until I noticed that the trash can right behind him had 8 Shipyard bottles in it.

I was in one fleabag outside Baltimore. I talked the manager down from $90 a night to $40 a night before checking in. The next morning, while checking out the desk clerk presented me with a bill for $90. Of course I complained. He went back to the computer and came back with a bill for $290. He "explained" that the desk clerk was not allowed to change the rate and if I was going to be trouble, I was getting the "rack rate". Luckily I had cash so I laid two twenties and a ten on the desk and walked out.

They run a roadside motel. It's not exactly a haven for straight shooters.

The only thing I'm confused about is why it's in Arkansas and not Florida.

Great link.

Mr. Sane:  I like Mingus, and I really like Fables of Faubus.  True, it is not the best recording quality, but it is a great song and a fitting tribute to Orval.

I decided to use an abbreviated edition because I figured most of the young'uns on this board had no idea who Orval Faubus was...Anyway, here's a better YouTube version of Faubus Fables, albeit 9 minutes long:

I first heard this on the Ken Burns: Jazz boxed set...

My dad saw Mingus play once. He came out, played a bit-which by accounts was incredible- passed out, and was carried off stage.

I remember hearing a story about him playing a benefit concert for the widow of a dead colleague, stopped the performance, and beatdown a fellow musician...

Garrison Keillor has a motel owner like that in his mythical Lake Wobegon MN.  I suppose they're all over, though I never encountered such in the 9 years I spent about 1/3 of my time residing in small town motels.
