As one of the commenters pointed out, it’s the War On Drugs that’s destroying the rain forest.  If cocaine were legal, it would replace coffee as Columbia’s main agricultural product and would provide peaceful employment for the peasants.  Also, cattle ranching is the cause of far more clearing of rain forest than coca cultivation.  Much of the land currently being used for coffee and cattle would be switched over to coca cultivation.
