An unexpected Christmas donation from actor David Spade is expected to provide Phoenix police with enough money to buy an additional 50 semi-automatic rifles for patrol officers in 2009.

The $100,000 gift announced Monday means as many as 300 officers could soon be armed with Bushmaster AR-15s, even in light of recent debates between police and union officials about the availability of the high-powered weapons during the city's ongoing budget strife. (read more)

So each officer is getting 1/6 of a $2000 AR?  I hope they deploy in squads of less than 6.

I have a problem with the militarization of the civil police force in this country, and I question the need for city patrol officers to be equipped with 223s.

I agree, it's a pointless waste of money now that the Army of the North has stood up; I mean we have gunships to confront those jaywalkers now, what's the point of adding a few silly AR-15's?

I don't mind if the police are ridiculously over-armed.  After all, what if we need them to defend us against the military?

I've seen my local PD's armory and it's laughable, outgunned by a single secret service sedan.
