Pretty much everyone has gotten over this sort of shit. Afghanistan is representative of Afghan culture only. It's utility is for the Afghans, who's environment requires a different culture to survive.

Also: Definitenly not 500 years, the official European religious wars only ended a bit less than 300 years ago, the Spanish were still burning people at the stake for translating the bible into Spanish as recently as the 19th century.

Let's face it.  Religious zealots, when given the power, will always murder and maim in His name.  The only reason Western culture isn't plagued with them now is because we've reined them in for the moment.
