To put that many nails in the dude's head? Gotta be at least a bit personal.

This does look personal. The police need to determine if he burned someone in a dope deal, screwed someone’s wife, or left a business partner holding the bag.

I like that they're asking for anyone to report if a nail gun has 'gone missing' from a work site or residence, as if the murderer had the presence of mind to first swipe such a device and THEN deploy it 34 times "just to be sure." Truly, if he knew what he was doing, he could have gotten the job done with six nails or less.

Amateur carpenters tend to use more materials than needed in fear their work won't hold up otherwise.

Ill be those CSI guys could do a detailed chemical analysis on the metal in the nail and determine that only one store sold those nails to only one guy in the last year. Or some other Deus Ex bullshit.
