Obviously he wasn’t a very good gamer if he hadn’t racked up a lot of additional lives!

HKG is a Quaker?

You could knock me over with one of those proverbial feathers.

Also, fnord, the "rack up lives" paradigm is pretty much dead.

Yep, those old dudes still refer to Mario Brothers as the standard for modern gaming (or maybe even PacMan, depending on how old the guy is).

What's your poison?  Lately I've been on the TF2 and the UT3, but I'm looking for something better.

Here's something I could use some advice with. Ever since I switched to the humanities, I've been out of the loop as far as games are concerned. I've more or less confined myself to the same tired-ass franchises I got into a decade ago: Civilization, Heroes of Might and Magic, Diablo, etc. I really like that kind of turn-based, long term character building and strategy games that I can play over a cup of coffee in the morning--the kind where you can slowly level up and gain experience, eventually shattering the shit out of the AI.

Anybody have any suggestions?

The Jesus doesn't really do turn-based.

If you're looking for slow single player strategy type games, you could do far worse than Sins of a Solar Empire, which has been out long enough to be real cheap.  I haven't played the expansion yet.

Fine.  If we're comparing nerd penises this morning, then I suggest fucking Dwarf Fortress.

Dwarf Fortress is insane.

Have you tried Travian?  You play against other people as opposed to an artificial intelligence; But, it is other-wise a strategy game which would seem to fit your criteria.

Drug Wars, John E. Dell's '80s DOS classic of financing, buying, selling, and fighting over drugs without detection. Highly addicting economics primer.
