It is amusing that it took nothing more than a change in posture to win a Peace Prize.

Perhaps it can only be understood as an expression of relief at the end of the era of the super power being controlled by a dangerous idiot.

Nominations closed on 1feb09, only 2 weeks after he obtained office.

I guess this is what they mean by reaching out to Muslim Nations.  This particular gesture occurred only 8 days before the Nobel nominations closed.

At least they give out the other Nobel prizes for something tangible. What international political crisis was averted or improved by Obama?

This doesn't merit a Peace Prize, but people forget that last February everybody--left, right and center--was talking about the world entering the next Great Depression. We didn't.

Forti, are you sad that your goodbuddy Bush didn't get honored for anything?

Don't sweat it. Peace just isn't his thing.

If they had a Nobel War Prize, I'm sure he would have been chosen.

Ah well, now that I think about it, the prize has been a joke for a while.  It was an even bigger joke when Yasser Arafat won it.

It took me a while to realize it wasn't a joke or even just a nomination. While I have no doubt Obama's heart is in the right place and that his intentions are certainly lofty, he really doesn't deserve the prize. On the other hand, maybe I can get High Street to nominate me for next year: it would look great on my resume.

I remember the righties having a similar whine-fest when Carter won the award.  Isn't it just too damn bad that the Nobel (Peace Prize) Committee is dominated by people who don't like war.  I'm enjoying the agita.  They've inflicted a little shock and awe.

I was also uninterested in spending more than five minutes on this, hence the general crappy quality.

While Obama might one day have actually deserved the award, to give it to him now reduces it to an Affirmative Action Prize of little more value than the medals given out at Special Olympics games.

Anybody can be nominated and I'll be happy to nominate you, but you'll have to think up your own damn qualifications.

Qualified Nominators
The right to submit proposals for the Nobel Peace Prize shall, by statute, be enjoyed by:

1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
2. Members of international courts;
3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;
4. Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
5. Board members of organizations who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize;
6. Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1) and
7. Former advisers appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

The Nobel Peace Prize may also be awarded to institutions and associations.

I wonder who (or how many) nominated him....

That was when the nominations closed, and there were more than 200 other nominees.  The vote did not occur until quite recently, and the "reaching out to muslim nations" rationale was only one of several.

I hear people complaining about Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize and I don't disagree. However, I am wondering who people think should have received it? I can't think of anyone this year who promoted peace. The list of nominees is unavailable. "Due to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, lists of nominations are held for 50 years, so the official list of the Nobel Peace Prize Nominees for 2009 will not be available until at least 2059."

Oh yeah. Fuck.  Not sure AM radio fans were as visceral towards the global warming stuff (since it really doesn't exist) as they've become with the new Messiah.  Good thing no town hall meetings in Alabama were involved.

The world has been in a period of change its entire history.  It was formed from a ball of molten lava and the life giving waters were brought here by colliding meteors.  Life began through a series of catastrophic circumstances and then almost dissapeared when the world became a ball of ice...  Every period in earth's history is marked by a massive extinction the largest being the Permian extiction which wiped out over 90% of the species on earth.  Our current period of earth history is extremely cold when compared to earth history and it is (thankfully) warming up.  Regardless of what is causing it to warm up is meaningless, everything is naturally caused regardless of whether or not it is manmade or comes from any other source.  If you somehow think that any affect that humans have is somehow "unnatural" then you're an arrogant fucking retard.  At best, humans are the current dominant species on earth and that is even questionable when compared to insects.  A quick look back through natural history shows that in every period of life's history that the dominant species changed its environment which isn't a good thing or a bad thing, it's just reality.  Now we have our new "messiah"... That sick sonofabitch is so fucking arrogant and self-centered that he wants to regulate what I eat and drink, he thinks he's going to save the fucking planet by cap and trade.  All he's doing is limiting my right to do whatever the fuck I want to do whenever I want to do it. Obama doesn't believe in natural rights, property rights, or self-ownership....  He's just as worthless as every single politician we've had since Jefferson.
