I just wanted to take a moment to bitch in a place where no one will give a shit.  Or at least in a place where people will tell me to go fuck myself.

My contract is ending in August, which means I will be jobless yet again.  I am so sick of contracting...but it seems I am doomed to forever be a contractor.

A big hearty FU to the Army who is under a budget constraint and chose not to renew my contract.  FU FU FU FU FU FU FU!

I guess I can start my career as a pole dancer now.

Unfortunately, you are a part of the vast army of underpaid workers in this economy.  And that sucks.  The unemployment rate may read 9.1%, but I would like to see an honest report that considers the underemployed who are not getting paid according to their expertise, the contract employees who work from job to job when they used to have steady work, and those who have said "fuck it, I give up".

There's never really been an "honest" report: media have speculated on the numbers of contractors and other temps, as well as those who simply gave up for years. When have we endured a recession when it wasn't an issue?

I was laid off from my last full time job almost two years ago and have simply continued working as a freelance writer and by doing occasional gigs with a catering company. Am I unemployed? Technically, I pay employment taxes through the occasional catering gigs and I simply pay other taxes in a lump sum for my freelance work.

Perhaps I'm among the underemployed?

All you have to do is double what they actually tell you and you will have all the honesty you desire.

I firmly believe that certain news articles come out to guage the populace's reaction to new ideas and then are revealed or shelved according to the freakout or lack thereof.  Case in point, cloning; when Dolly the Sheep was revealed I guarantee the technology was ten years ahead of what was admitted.  People freaked the fuck out about human organ harvesting farms and the media quieted down.  I bet you there are ways to grow identical replicas already in place.

Contractors are always coming and going, but we never really get counted in the unemployment surveys because it is almost like being a freelancer.  Sometimes you have work, sometimes you don't.  I dunno.  Either way it blows to be stressing about a job again.

Thanks Taint.  I fear I am getting too old to deal with this kind of stress.   Some people have careers, I have jobs that flit in and out of my life like the asshole men I have dated.

Exactly.  See, this is already a fully capable operation I bet; three years my ass.  The media reports it and the backlash decides whether or not the truth comes out.

I'm one of those in the "fuck it" category although I still go through the motions of applying now and then.  Just last week a bot from Brazil hacked into my Yahoo account and sent Viagra ads to all of my recent job contacts.  Ah well, it hardly matters.

I quit my job as a consultant/contractor in May 2009, and finally got a non-contract job in January 2011... so brace yourself.

"It's good," said worker Jiang Yao. "It's better for you because it's genetically modified."

I still believe genetically modified organisms will prove to be a disaster.  Between allergies and genes for drug production finding their way into food animals and plants, this will turn out to be one of our worst mistakes.

Starting your own firm of disgusted contractors is out of the question?

Well Roger, since this is where the nasty side of my personality hangs out, I'm going to say TOUGH SHIT as you expected.  If you post this on the board where the kind decent side of me hangs out, I will express genuine sympathy for you and concern for your future!

Be careful what you wish for.  As a cleared contractor you're well positioned where you are.

Ah, I thought you had it (or at least S) based on some of the places you'd worked.

MSG, it's remarkably difficult to get sponsored for a clearance.  It's expensive and can take a year or more (at least with FBI, and I doubt DOD is any faster).  90% of the government contractor positions around here require an active clearance and will not sponsor.

The last place I worked as an employee, we had a coder working on a TS project for a year before his clearance was denied.  He was let go, but his work was still accepted for the project. Hell of a way to run a railroad.

Fun fact, it's technically illegal to admit to having a clearance to anyone without one AND a need to know.  Catch 22.

I employed my stuporduperdeluxe top cleavage clearance and peeked into Smitty's heavily redacted file detailing, among other high crimes, the horrors of Sheila Austin, Meg Kelso and Jeffrey Schott.

I do have a clearance, just not TS.  It is hard to get a sponsor for that based on what I do.

I like Choads interpretation of why I dont have a TS.
