There's never really been an "honest" report: media have speculated on the numbers of contractors and other temps, as well as those who simply gave up for years. When have we endured a recession when it wasn't an issue?

I was laid off from my last full time job almost two years ago and have simply continued working as a freelance writer and by doing occasional gigs with a catering company. Am I unemployed? Technically, I pay employment taxes through the occasional catering gigs and I simply pay other taxes in a lump sum for my freelance work.

Perhaps I'm among the underemployed?

Well I don't hail from Southeast Asia, so I am pretty sure I am safe from being a spurned janitor.

All you have to do is double what they actually tell you and you will have all the honesty you desire.

Contractors are always coming and going, but we never really get counted in the unemployment surveys because it is almost like being a freelancer.  Sometimes you have work, sometimes you don't.  I dunno.  Either way it blows to be stressing about a job again.

Thanks Taint.  I fear I am getting too old to deal with this kind of stress.   Some people have careers, I have jobs that flit in and out of my life like the asshole men I have dated.

I'm one of those in the "fuck it" category although I still go through the motions of applying now and then.  Just last week a bot from Brazil hacked into my Yahoo account and sent Viagra ads to all of my recent job contacts.  Ah well, it hardly matters.

I still believe genetically modified organisms will prove to be a disaster.  Between allergies and genes for drug production finding their way into food animals and plants, this will turn out to be one of our worst mistakes.

Ah, I thought you had it (or at least S) based on some of the places you'd worked.   

MSG, it's remarkably difficult to get sponsored for a clearance.  It's expensive and can take a year or more (at least with FBI, and I doubt DOD is any faster).  90% of the government contractor positions around here require an active clearance and will not sponsor.

The last place I worked as an employee, we had a coder working on a TS project for a year before his clearance was denied.  He was let go, but his work was still accepted for the project. Hell of a way to run a railroad.

Fun fact, it's technically illegal to admit to having a clearance to anyone without one AND a need to know.  Catch 22.

I do have a clearance, just not TS.  It is hard to get a sponsor for that based on what I do.

I like Choads interpretation of why I dont have a TS.
