What don't you buy for moral/philosophical/political reasons, and what are those reasons?

I only have one item:

I do not buy toilet papers that use pictures of babies on the packaging.  Babies do not use toilet paper.  I do not understand why toilet paper manufacturers insist on using babies to advertise their products.  Is it a softness metaphor?  I don't see wiping my ass with a baby to be particularly effective.

This peculiarity of mine limits me to Kleenex (who are kind of borderline since they use a puppy, but I think a puppy would be a more effective shitwipe, what with the fur and flappy ears and such), Scott, and a couple of generic brands.

OK, two items, I guess, since I don't buy Goodyear tires for the same reason.

Oh, and I don't give money to de beers because diamonds are about as inherently valuable as garnet.  This one doesn't really count since I can't afford to go around buying diamonds anyway.

I first thought he said De Bears.... like he is from Chicago but hates the local football...

Thank god I watch NatGeo or I wouldn't have known what you are talking about.... (the whole blood diamond, buying up the entire market to keep prices fixed, etc)

Blood diamonds don't bother me.  I use computers and cell phones, and the rare-earth metals used for doping silicon are mined in much the same way as diamonds.  My objection is purely to the market manipulation by de beers, and the added subtext that if I don't buy my girl a stone that should be ground up and used in water cutting machines then I don't really love her.

I won't buy Goodyear tires be-cause I didn't appreciate their attitude when I spoke with them about the guarantee on their tires when I had one blow-out on me after less than 500 miles of usage (This was shortly be-fore it "came to light" that they were making defective tires).  It blew out in the middle of Saint Louis of all places.  I all-ready dreaded driving through Saint Louis as it was prior to that incident.

I boycott the obvious two (Diamonds and chocolate) as well as Israel; But, obviously, I don't go a-round recommending that others boycott Israel due to a little known Federal law which makes calling for a boycott against Israel illegal.

I'm having trouble trying to find a copy of the law at the moment.  I'd read it some years back and the wording is quite strange.  The law reads as though it might apply to a few different countries, but only specifically mentions Israel.  So, I can't imagine how they could prosecute any-body for calling for a boycott against any other country.

I boycott anything that benefits a church or religion. I don't care if it's BBQ chicken dinners, food drives or clothing donations. Any donation to a church frees up money they would otherwise feel compelled to set aside for local charities. If churches have to decide between their building fund, local charities and spreading the gospel via missionaries, so be it.

Also any movie with C. Thomas Howell.

I am in recovery from a long-term jones for dark chocolate.  My favorites are from Latin America, and there are some excellent "fair trade" dark chocolates that you can find at equalexchange.coop.  Thus, you can easily avoid Ivory Coast chocolate and still get top quality.

Wal-Mart, Circuit City, any business that donates to fucked causes like Prop. 8, Anti-Choice, The Republican Party, or sponsoring Turd World immigration among other fucked causes.  Israeli products and businesses that support Israel.  Any business I suspect of hiring illegals or know has sent a lot of jobs overseas.  Businesses or charities connected with religious groups.  Fast food chains, both because their practices rape the rainforest and for my own health.  More to follow.

I don’t give a shit about blood diamonds or the blood dripping from the rare earth elements in my electronics.  I also don't give a shit about the exploitation of workers who produce chocolate or coffee.  I do care about these products displacing rainforest land.

Edit: I try to buy American products when possible and reasonable.  I also have a preference for products that don’t have kosher symbols on them because much of the money collected via the kosher tax winds up supporting Israel.  I also avoid highly processed foods with mystery ingredients that are difficult to pronounce.

2nd Edit: I avoid veal, eggs produced by battery raised hens and Fois Gras because of animal cruelty.  Farmed salmon (Frankenfish) and other genetically modified foods.  I don’t eat caviar because sturgeon are endangered.  It helps that I don’t even like caviar.  Kellogg products have just been added to the list.  Boycotting or avoiding things has become second nature, which is why it takes time for me to list and remember why I boycott things.

Hobby Lobby - a craft store we have 'round here that is run by Uber-Xtians and is closed on Sundays.
Lucky Mart - a gas station about a mile from my house where I once left my debit card only to have $200+ worth of lotto tickets purchased with it. When I asked the clerk whether they requested ID she said, "Well, the card didn't have 'please see ID' written on it."
Harmony Market - a local foo-foo health food store. One day I was out dumpster diving and learned that they throw away glass, plastic, and paper with the rest of their garbage rather than recycling it.
The mall - 2nd on the "moo" factor.
Home product parties - if you want me to come over and hang out, fine, but if you're only inviting me to visit so you can get your free hostess gift, then fuck off.

If I'm in Montgomery Alabama, I walk - still.  I don't eat grapes when I'm in Southern California.  Individual boycotts are useless to the intended target.  Internet rumors are much more effective (see P&G supporting Church of Satan for an example).  When making a purchase of an individual product over $50 I try to buy local before I turn to the internets.

I had never heard of the chocolate thing until this thread.  I thank you for the knowledge.
