It's because the Uighurs are Muslim. It will play well with the Iranian public, and Ahameiniwhatsisname needs some public approval very badly right now.

It was probably this bad well before it became international news. "Ethnic strife" doesn't reach our ears/televisions/internetz until multiples of people start dying or getting wounded. It's either another Chechnya or Darfur, minus the starvation and the rapes.
As it is, I'm not sure why we CARE. There has been, for several decades, a formula that describes if you are X many miles from activity Y, the more or less you are influenced by it. This is on the complete opposite side of the planet, in a region that is clearly too stupid to be culturally mixed. Let them all kill each other.
