That’s not the way to do it. You drug them, “find” them dead or dying after you return from playing cards or some other shipboard activity, and wail to the investigators that you warned them not to wash their meds down with alcohol.

That's a pretty good idea, but requires a little more pre planning, if you don't already have a ready supply of said drugs. Also, if drinking/drugging is out of character for the victim, could raise suspicion. Get a load of me, all of a sudden i'm Ellery Queen.
