Emmeran:

For some people, having "no money" doesn't mean they have a 401K they'd prefer not to tap, or nothing left over after paying their bills - it means they literally do not have a penny over and above basic subsistence.

Be glad you and I aren't in that boat, but some people are, and I feel for 'em.

I've been there mate; I grew up cutting cord wood for a living - worked Carny in the summer for extra cash.

the upside is that swinging an 20 lb. sledge daily for hours on end makes you hella strong with big shoulders....chicks dig big shoulders.

And the lamest thing,is that corn is the least valuable vegetable you can grow. The yield is 2 ears per plant, and it takes up a square foot of garden space. You're better off buying it at the store. And the nutritional value of corn is negligible. It's a starch, not health food. She looked like she could skip the corn, anyhow. Mesclun greens or cucumbers would be better for her, and a higher yield, more valuable crop.

And no, in the summer corn is NEVER a dollar an ear, Dusty. In the poorer barrio neighborhoods it's even cheaper. Granted, it's shitty produce, but c'mon.

She's totally angling for donations.

So you are shopping in Portland now?  Not at all the stores, but several sure.

You grow it right there. It would be even cheaper than it is where I am in the barren desert.

Safeway has 5 for a dollar in your area.

Yeah, that's recent.  Last week it was 79 cents an ear.

Admit it. The greedy hambeast can afford to buy her piglet an ear of corn (even though corn is not necessarily healthy or expensive or a wise choice to grow herself).

Peeps are going through some really hard times up here Sweetykins.  I can't speak for her, but food is damn expensive lately.  I have had to cut down on my Foie Gras, and my veal tastings lately

I haven't much use for any plant I can't eat or volatize but I do have a thing for hydrangeas. So did my neighbor's dog, who watered them to stubble inside a month. I blame its keeper, though, not the vandal... which is not the case with my local woodchuck. He behaved last year after I cut him in on my
zucchini surplus but we've had a soggy, sunless summer and woodoink upped the vig. Remember Bill Murray in caddyshack?

Gardens are always a snake-eye crap shoot.
