Almost all of the people he swindled were Jewish, so it's understandable he's not going to hang out with the Jewish prisoners. Rumor has it the Russian Mafia (who are really Russian Jews) want him dead, so it's pretty smart of him to hang out with the Casino Indians and Queers, two groups unlikely to have business dealings with the Russian Mafia.

Well, the guy supposedly suffers from prostate cancer... perhaps he figures by hanging out with the homosexuals he can get a free prostate massage? After all, that's supposed to help that condition.
And the logic of having an admitted swindler being assigned to the *engraving* section somehow fails me... I'm picturing him making $20 printing plates on the sly.
