I wish I could say it has ever been any different but alas this is how it has always been.

True. I saw this first hand from the floor of my Town Meeting tonight.
Its always messy but in the end, usually works. I'll excerpt and post my own video soon as I can, wherein and whereas you will see your not so humble host humiliate our defacto mayor. God fuck almighty, that was fun!

And to think that most people really believe that Congress passes legislation based on a majority vote. The power to decide the fate of legislation is held by a small band of leaders of the party holding the majority. These people decide whether or not a bill comes out of committee, goes to the floor for a vote, and how the votes are tallied. This is anything but democratic.

Does anybody really believe we live in a Democracy? The people have very little say in the way this country is managed unless they happen to be one of the Oil People, Insurance People, Legal Industry People, or a member of another group of important people.

Apparently, it's a heads-up that we're about to open a YouTube clip.

We don't live in a democracy. Never have. It's a Democratic Republic.
But that is also a moot point these days. Refer to my previous comments about Shari Lewis & Lambchop.

Oh, please. I get so tired of that line, generally spouted by the most extreme of Repugs when they're feeling sanctimonious (unlike yours truly who is never sanctimonious because he is so above that, but I digress...). So the fuck what? Our institutions are democratic in construct and nature, even if the sheer size of the country makes direct democracy impossible (California's an excellent example of what a disaster direct democracy can be in a large country or state).
People who spout that line are generally avoiding the real topic at hand.

That's why I titled it as I did. We do live in a democratic republic. We, as citizens, don't vote for a damned thing... so it's not a democracy. Instead, we vote for representatives, who then make votes on our behalf... hence a democratic republic.

What topic would that be, in this particular case?
that John Murtha is a douche bag? That our so called leaders are basically a bunch of penny ante crooks who play two sides of the same coin to serve their own interests? Don't worry, you won't ever hear me defending the Repugs as you called them. Or the Democraps either. They all suck. I'll even go as a far as to say that if you ran for office, I might vote for you.
I am all for a democratic republic. Not so much a democracy but it beats what is going on now. Either way, right now we are all in the same boat, and we are spending all our time rocking back and forth from left to right. All the while we are taking on water while the skipper is watching from shore and waiting to sell our organs for medical testing.

Well, sorry, that wasn't terribly clear, was it? I don't know how long you've been lurking, but some of our fellow High Street residents may remember that I was a political reporter for many years and - very frequently - when caught on points of order or fact in which they were egregiously ignorant, it was nothing for various Republicans I was covering to throw that line out. It happened, happens, a lot.
I like "Democrap". I hadn't heard that before. And, yes, Murtha is a douche bag.

I missed a few years, but you might remember me. Just use a mirror. We even traded barbs more than once in the past. I won't say I'm reformed, but I am.....changed.
Political reporter huh? You must have a stainless steel stomach.....

Calling a senator a douche bag is redundant.

Em, someday you may need to buy a favor from a senator. You shouldn't publicly call them on being douche bags. Remember how that douche bag Ahhnald got even with the douche bag legislator who told him to "kiss my gay ass."

Sorry mate, I'm just not that type. I don't buy favors nor do I ever call them in - I know, I know, it's a personality fault but I just can't be that guy.
But Arnuld's revenge was a work of art......

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the YT at the beginning of the thread was to let Emmeran know this was a thread to be avoided. I thought there was no time in your life for such foolishness.
So why should anyone bother with the YT?

Nah, it's just to let you know what you are getting into....I skip over the vid's until I have time. It's actually a complaint against laziness....youtube if full of contrived odd shit....highstreet is about the real odd shit. Take the article about the guy arrested for fucking traffic signs for example....that's real and that is highstreet.

I agree, but the problem with this position is that we must either hold our noses and vote, or abstain and let the loons run the show. I believe there is a very simple solution. We should hold members of Congress to the provisions of California's Brown Act Local elected officials can only meet in private to discuss certain matters like personnel issues, real estate negotiations, etc. Even then they must make a report in open session. No policy making is allowed unless the public is invited. No back room deals. With the light of responsibility shining on them, our representatives would probably act in a much more responsible manner.

You do have a trusting and hopeful side. Ultimately, it's pointless, of course.

Yeah yeah, Murtha's a douchebag, so what else is new? Whatever else you want to say about him, turn about is fair play, and payback is bitchy. The Repugs pulled the exact same trick when they had the con, and I've seen video Sensenbrenner doing far worse when he was a committee chair. Fuck 'em all.
