It's a Firefly/Serenity thing. Definitely worth catching if you've managed to miss it.

Poor kids. I was staying at a hotel one time that happened to be hosting a child beauty pageant. I passed by a hateful mom in a hallway who was chewing out her sobbing, frightened little girl, telling her, "Get to work, young lady!" Sick.

I can remember when "TLC" stood for "The Learning Channel." Now apparently it's the Freaks/Human Misery/Voyeurism Channel.
Twenty minutes of footage of the Little Miss beauty pageant phenomenon was enough for me for life. Having said that, most of the little girls seem to dig it, at least on some level. Which is not to say that overeager parents can't ruin the fun for them.
I'll tell you what appalled me above everything else: Not the disgusting parents, not even the hair-whitening sexualization of the children on stage. It was a single shot a few seconds long in which a child, identified as being four years of age, scratched an itch beneath her eye by first stretching her (heavily made-up) face and then rolling her (heavily mascaraed) eyes upward before delicately scratching with one fingernail.
I don't know if you men get this or not, but that is how women learn to touch their faces after we start using makeup, so as not to smear. To see a four-year-old's face whored up was of course disgusting; but somehow to see her use that unconscious gesture made my bones freeze. No child that young should have learned to do that! The stripper dance moves on stage actually bothered me less.
...Oh, and here's a picture, which is not related to any of this.
