The South has a distinct history that sets it apart from the rest of the country.  To force Southern Whites not to celebrate their heritage is fucked up.  I would never go to a Confederate Pride Parade, and I voted with my feet to leave the South because I don't care for Southern Culture and The Southern Way Of Life.  Even so, I have to ask; what right do others have to force Southerners to deny their heritage?

I'm not a Southerner, but I don't know anyone else that celebrates the ugly parts of their heritage so much as Americans from the South. I can't think of one good instance where you have people whose ancestors physically lost a war after trying to destroy their own country still fighting about it.

On one hand I agree with you, on the other one has but to look to Northern Ireland with the Feckin' Orange Parades.  Nothing so disgusting as a bunch of Proddies beating on the Paddies over a victory from some 400 years ago.  The endless cycle of stupidity that the UK and especially the English have supported to the detriments of all in Northern Ireland.

I’m not a Southerner even though I lived part of my life in the South.  I will try to explain the Southern view of the Civil War (they call it The War of Northern Aggression).

Slavery was a peripheral issue behind the Northern invasion of The South as proved by Lincoln’s own statements about the inferiority of the negro race, and the fact that he didn’t bother to issue The Emancipation Proclamation until the middle of the war.  The real reasons had to do with The South bearing the burden of what were considered unreasonable taxes and tariffs.  The political union of the various states was considered a voluntary matter as the Constitution was then understood.  The Southern States were exercising what they considered their constitutional right to withdraw from The Union, as it was no longer in their best interests to stay.  Some states such as Virginia didn’t join the Confederacy until after Lincoln tried to federalize it’s state militia and order it to fight against other Southerners.  Lincoln violated the constitution in ways that served as an inspiration to later presidents such as Nixon, George H. W. Bush, and Cheney.

Most Confederate soldiers did not own slaves and were not fighting for slavery.  They were fighting to protect their homeland from foreign invasion.  Many blacks fought for The South, as they saw the Union armies as invaders of their homeland who would ravage it and the Southern People. To understand why Southerners do not trust Yankees and Washington, you have to realize that The South didn’t really even begin to recover from the war and the subsequent occupation until the 1970s.  The North and South were evolving into two very different societies, and frankly the rest of America would be better off today if The South had been allowed to leave quietly and go its own way.

As for another people for whom defeat in war was a galvanizing factor in how they see themselves as distinct from their neighbors, you should look at the history of Serbia.  The defeat of the Serbs in the battle for Kosovo in 1389 was the catalyst for Serbian Nationalism.

History is history, and if you want to celebrate it, I think that should be your choice.  It's a right as an American really.  I don't like all the confederate crap myself, but could care less if they want to parade around in confederate uniforms.  Whatever.  There are skinheads, nazis, the KKK, and militants that march around in their uniforms preaching their crap.  If they can do it, why can't the Southerners?

Yeah.  And Serbian Nationalism was such a great idea, right?  There's a time when people of intelligence and good conscience need to admit, once and for all, that whatever former glory there may have been in an imagined identity, it's time to move on and join the modern world.  After all, we don't see Canaanite Brotherhoods or Hittite Identity groups...
