There is clearly a cause and effect relationship! I recommend getting rid of rap, American Idol, and the Disney Music Star factory, thereby encouraging a renaissance in Rock Music that results in groups and stars who aren’t chosen by corporations for their surgically enhanced fuck appeal.

I don't find sustainability. I hear some song by some artist/band and get jazzed but the rest of their work just doesn't match up.
Imelda May, Johnny got a Boom Boom.
Diablo Swing Orchestra, Balrog Boogie
Perhaps it's dilution. ANYBODY can put out a CD these days, and there is so much mediocrity.
Meanwhile, getting even 1/3 of the oil out of the ground from most oil reservoirs is quite an accomplishment. Wringing just another 5% from our lower 48 onshore oil fields would be about like finding another super ultra gigantic oil field, and no offshore drilling. Won't solve the problem, though.

Just like all the best petroleum, all the best music has always been underground.
The Stooges, The MC5, Joy Division, early REM, Bimskalabim, the Vipers, the Lyres, Buck-o-Nine, Devics, Guided by Voices, and on and on...

I agree. For a short period during the 60's and early 70's the underground bubbled to the surface. Artists actually had some modicum of control over their sound and their destiny. Sure there are great artists out there right now, but with corporate marketing gurus feeding pablum to the teen market, they seldom get wide play. You can't have a "greatest song of all time" without wide-spread public acceptance.

Wolfmother: I enjoy them, but it isn't exactly new ground. It's so... 1975. The drummer is a monster tho. Gotta admire that.

Also, Phoenix is great. Airbourne is a lot like ACDC but they are amazing.
Wolfmother reminds me of Zeppelin.
