This one doesn't bother me so much as the animal can't be in pain. Odd considering I'm probably brimming with toxoplasmosis and loves me some Felidae.

here is a diagram of how a cat is decerebrated.  It's amazing that complex action such as this can take place when the only part of the brain still connected is the brain stem and medulla.  Notice that the cat was suspended from wires.  Balance must take place higher in the brain.
