Corporatists beware; labor is about to make a huge comeback.  The US industrial belt is now an upside bet.

Oh right, King harvest has surely come again for the rust belt?

With a 17% raise of what? a few bucks a day, I would think it will be a long time before we see Detroit and the rest fire up again to compete in that market.

And I have a hot deal on a rolling mill in Youngstown you can buy as you await the return of the glory days.

I doubt the business will come back to the U.S. rust belt when China falters.  Michigan, despite the money they pay Jeff Daniels to tout the state's "business friendly attitude", remains toxic to investors. and ranks 49th among CEOs.

You are missing the point; China won't falter but as wages rapidly increase they will morph into a net import economy.  Cheap manufacturing will have to go elsewhere; unfortunately the remaining elsewheres lack the security or societal makeup to produce that level of manufacturing at that costs.

Cost will rise and in due time manufacturing jobs will be created in the US - regardless of how badly the republicans/democrats try to fuck it up.

I wish you were right, but I believe there are many countries who could gear up manufacturing cheaper and with far fewer regulations than in the U.S.  Even if the jobs did come back here, they would probably go to Texas, Nevade, and the other business-friendly states.

Emm is right that manufacturing in the US will finally begin to grow again, especially as China and India experience cost increases.  The will experience increasing demands from labor, public demands for minimum environmental safeguards, increasing energy and materials costs, and all the other things that the governments have been keeping at bay.  With their enormous populations and the inevitable rise in consumer demand, they will have to import more.  With wages stagnant or declining here, and a healthy labor base available, some of the manufacturing should come here.  Phreddy is probably right as to which states will see the uptick, at least for new plant development.

I think we will see a growth of internal manufacturing again; but I also wanted to see the conservatives come out all doom and gloom - delightfully they did not disappoint.

It took us about 50 years (1955 until 2005) to go from the top of the world on nearly every social and industrial demographic to fighting to stay on top and borrowing out the wazoo to keep ahead of the Joneses.
