Meanwhile it's the hippie growers and the drug cops who are fighting the proposition.  Follow the money.

In Okrent's Last Call:  The Rise and Fall of Prohibition he shows that organized crime was all for prohibition and put their ample dough behind candidates supported by the Anti-Saloon League.  Really, the parallels between this and that are too remarkable to ignore.

They finally realized that they're broke and are looking for new sources of "revenue"...  They all want to regulate and tax people who just want to possess a plant for recreational purposes... Fuck em, we don't need the permission of these douche bags to do anything at all.  If you like smoking pot quit waiting for them to okay it, just do it.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Prop 19 guys are going to Regulate or Tax something I can grow on my back porch. They also tax beer, but not MY beer.

I'm all for decriminalization. That said, I'm a bit wary of the drive to control, tax and regulate marijuana. Ideally, growing and selling pot should be about as regulated and controlled as growing and selling tomatoes you've tended in your own garden, in my opinion. But even if the first step is to allow only commercialized distibution, I'm all for it.

I would put it just like that. If you want to sell the finished product as a business, then it gets taxed and regulated, just like any other agricultural product. After all, if you are going to sell to the general public, someone should be watching quality. But if you want to grow it yourself, why bother someone about it?

One Conservative doesn't like the idea...

That's enough reason for me. Pissing off Calderon is just a nice side effect.

Oh yeah, Once one set of Corporate/Law enforcement/political special interests groups lose their monopoly on revenue from the "drug war" another set of special interest groups buying the same lobbyists and politicians will step in to take advantage of the taxing and controlling of Marijuana.

What we will end up with is a system like alcohol distribution anti free market  monopolies. Take a close look at how John McCain and his wife reap their millions. Her family brought a Budweiser distributorship. A distributorship operating in states where it is mandated to be the sole middleman for Budweiser. No direct buying can happen from a manufacturer or another distributor. The McCains have spent 10s of millions buying politicians to keep these anti free market laws. As have all middlemen distributors of alcohol with government mandated monopolies.

This is the danger that face marijuana commercialization. Of course it will only be for your protection. Can't have any of this wild impure homegrown entering the free market and posing a threat to our health.

It is a vice.  Money to be made.
Who makes it may be the question.

And what about the elephant in the room, the rest of the "illegal" drugs?

Just for the record I am anti-prohibition, but am also extremely amused by the concept that Santa Monica will ticket you for smoking a cigarette at the park but not for smoking a joint.  Cuz ya know, smoking kills.

**Edit: Also, you have to wonder, does tossing out a roach then mandate the much higher fine of littering than the current fine for possession?

Hear Hear Johnny!  Who is to say what is the acceptable drug of choice.  While I understand the right to purchase Budwiser, I certainly do not do so.  I tend to enjoy the more craft side of brews.  Furthermore, the tasty brews my friends personally make are quite delightful and not regulated.  Soon as you bring commercialization into any product, it has a level of prostitution to it.  But nonetheless, prostitutes are also a necessity in our society as well...

Who would you rather have an interaction with?  Someone with one joint up or someone with six in the bag?

more should also be done to stem the flow of illegal weapons from the US.

Shrug.  Legalize them.
