Don't sully the proud name of Punk Rock with the silly emo label. They aren't any more Punk than Robert Smith.

Obviously, you didn't listen to the first four albums, or were aware of the scene then.

I will freely admit that I know very little of that musical genre and oddly don't feel the least bit deprived.

Of course not.

I just enjoy the music without fussing about the genre details; downside is that it's difficult for me to identify the songs I like for purchasing - upside I can gracefully avoid the silly arguments about what exactly defines said genre.

What I heard didn't make me want to dig into the vaults.
So, would you call emo Punk?

No, I wouldn't; a sub-genre perhaps. From what I gather, you don't really know much about the roots of it. 2nd and 3rd generations do not define where something came from.
I am in a lousy mood today, so don't take anything I say personally. If you are unable to dig around, then your statement about Smith is Bull Shit. Just Sayin'. What an artist evolves to is part of an ongoing process. Don't make judgement calls based on your self imposed lack of data.
