O' the slippery slope down to the cesspool of corporate profits: Sell you clients info to one and all. Good going "Mr. Different"! Yes, we are rebellious, we are techno-phetishist... Ha!

I would take that article with a grain of salt. What Apple is being accused of is not sufficiently preventing the people who write apps from using the user data that they have access to, not giving out user data. It's not really clear what it is that Apple can do about that. They can block particularly egregious examples that they know of, and if I understand correctly it's against Apples app store agreement already, but other than preventing any app that could uniquely identify a device or access your data (which is a whole heck of a lot of useful apps), I don't see how they're involved at all other than the fact that they have deep pockets.

I'm sorry, but I'm an Apple nut. I'm currently running an Ipod touch, two Nano's, one IPad and my most recent addition two days ago is the Macbook Pro. That being said I'm not a big fan of them abusing intellectual property laws like they do. Love the product, hate the people.

Oh, I would not ask you to not hate Apple. I love it when people hate on Apple, mostly because I think they've benefited from just not being Microsoft for far too long. I'm just saying that in this case they might not be being evil, and may just be the victims of sensational headlines that turn out to not have much to do with the current situation.

I'm debating the merits of a Mac instead of a PC for my upcoming new laptop purchase. I love my iPad...and my iPod...and soon my iPhone. Maybe I need help.

I agree. At least with Android anyone can look under the hood and figure out what is and isn't happening, not just some techno-monks sworn to secrecy.
But that said, the allegations are spurious. The only thing that they have access to is the unique device key, which is essentially like your network card MAC address or Intel Chip ID, plus your GPS device, which tells them where you are. If they use your lat/lon to figure out where you spend the majority of your time and call that your "home", then do a lat/lon->nearest address to call that your street address, they could certainly find out your house value, likely income, any court issues and bounce it off Experian for credit card and spending information. Then they can spam you more precisely. Big whoop. It's what internet advertisers have been doing forever.
What's funny is that if Apple was doing it themselves, they would wrap a fancy name around it like "User Locality Specialization for an Enhanced Browsing Experience" and all of the Mac fags would swoon.

You may have a point there.
Anyone tries to take away my iPod better come with an army.

If I want to know what's happening under the hood of my computer, I'll build up a 2901 system or something like and write code for it. Make it asynchronous just for fun..... Until then, piss on Windows, I like my iMac.
Here in Japan, Android phones run a weird sort of Japanese An-do-ro-i-do that plays local television stations, plays J-pop music SO well and turns itself into a credit card, among other very cute things. You also need about 20 years of hard study to even begin to read the kanji characters that everything uses, and everything sucks. Also, you can't really use them outside of Japan without triple long distance charges: An iPhone is handy to have around. Unfortunately, the provider that Apple has locked in here doesn't really provide service at my house, unless you go outside and stand by the front gate.

Recommended. My bomb shelter was virtually useless before I got it. You should be able to find something similar in 1.5/2 GHz that will work with Softbank.

Why not just get a phone with a decent provider? 186.USD? Seriously?

Actually, I paid $49 for mine. It's currently listed at $86 from an Amazon retailer.
Bless you for living in a cauldron of the line of sight FM and microwave spectrum, but not all of us do. I'm mid-megalopolis on the East Coast and dead spots abound for every major carrier.
Also some of us have specific needs and and I heartily endorse this product for threading through the Faraday cage in your bomb shelter. You do have a Faraday cage in your bomb shelter I hope
