Just to play Devil's Advocate: About the only way to avoid belonging to Hitler Youth was to be, or claim to be, Jewish, Mischling, or otherwise non-Aryan. This wasn't considered a viable option at the time.

Asking a 14 year old to make a (value)judgement regarding a political and ethics situation like this is of course difficult. War is terrible, and from relatives and friends I have heard both the horrific, the heroic and the inbetweenies about members of the German populace.
Heaven help us if there ever is something like this in the US.
