The only real cheapness I saw growing up was from my grandpa.  He made a lot of money working in the oil field, but never spent a penny on anything that he didn't have to.  Through his entire life he owned three cars all of which he kept immaculate, the last being a silver Ford LTD.



There was no dining out, bad habits, vacations or entertainment.  Somehow I've become the exact opposite by eating out every meal, drinking constantly, multiple long distance vacations every year, I'm on my fourteenth car and I'm an entertainment addict.  My grandpa died with more money in the bank that he had spent through his entire life and I'm sure I'm going to die broke.  At least I'm taking advantage.

I don't know if I can explain this better than Choad.  At one time, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do" and "Waste not, want not" were rules followed by most people in this country whether they were rich or poor.  Rich people didn't just save for a rainy day, they kept more than enough on hand to outlast a major storm with widespread flooding.  It wouldn't do to appear to be in financial distress or actually have to ask for help.  Any item purchased was expected to be sturdy enough to last for a long time, possibly for more than one lifetime.  People from Old Money considered ostentatious displays of wealth to be very low class behavior.  And spoiling children was considered bad form, because they would grow up to be weak and dependent.

While there was no need for it financially, I wore a lot of hand me downs as a child because my parents saw no reason why I shouldn't wear clothes my brothers outgrew.  My parents kept their cars for many years; of course cars were built better back then.  I had to shame my parents into getting a Color TV by showing my friends the last B&W TV in the neighborhood.  Their view was that it still worked, so there was no reason to replace it.   

Some of this has rubbed off on me, because Partner™ drives me crazy by throwing out perfectly good household items and buying new ones to replace them.  For example, we've owned at least four different coffee makers in the last twenty years because at some point the current one no longer looked acceptable to him for one reason or another.  I've gone to look for items I had put away in case I needed them again in the future, only to find he threw them out!  I find it difficult to throw usable items away; Partner™ will cart them to Goodwill with the attitude we can always get a new one if we need to.

it helps that the palestinians primarily use slingshots and the Israelies use automatic firearms.

It also helps that the Israeli's have a massive Western propaganda machine behind them.  When an Israeli gets shot it's an attack on Democratic ideals, when a Palestinian gets shot it's merely self-defense and justified.

The non-White Jews in Israel are a minority, and are treated like shit by the Ashkenazim. The black female ones are encouraged to use a very dangerous form of birth control in order to keep their birthrate down.  You skirted the issue of why the Palestinians are refugees in the first place, and besides it isn't feasible for surrounding countries to take in an entire nation’s population when that country becomes occupied by foreigners.  To do so would overwhelm and destabilize their own societies.  Black African countries and their problems are totally irrelevant to the Israeli/Palestinian situation.  Bringing them up was a piss poor attempt at misdirection on your part.

I and millions of other Americans are tired of subsidizing the occupation of Palestine.  It costs us billions in tax dollars paid to Israel every year, billions of dollars in “Fuck You” fees added to the price of crude oil, and earns us the hatred of a large portion of the world’s population.  And Israel shows its gratitude by, among other things, bombing an American warship, spying on America, and selling the classified information and technology they obtain from us.  Israel sold the information they obtained from Jonathan Pollard to the Soviet Union; this resulted in the deaths of over 200 American agents and dried up our sources of information about the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.  They’ve sold restricted technology to China, which has helped devastate our economy and strengthened the Chinese military.  I could go on, but I will stop with these examples of our “friend” Israel’s treachery.

Hardly sour grapes.  Remember that before 1948, that land where Israel is now belonged to someone else, and western powers (read: USA, UK) arbitrarily took it away and handed it over to the Jews.  They could have given the Jews, say, Long Island (where, IIRC, there are more actual Jews than in Israel) but instead they chose to fuck the Palestinians.

Now, to be fair, the neighbouring nations fuck the Palestinians too and want very little to do with them, but they're not KILLING the Palestinians nor taking away their stuff for shits and giggles.

If the UN met tomorrow and decided to hand over Illinois to the Palestinians, would Americans bitch and moan?  Would they just say "meh, OK"?  Somehow I think not.  How about if the Palestinians showed up and started kicking Americans out of their homes and handing the houses over to Palestinians?

Not that I know much about the vagaries of Middle Eastern cultural relations, but it's my understanding that the Sephardic Jews in Israel at the time of the Holocaust thought the European (Ashkenazic) Jews got what they deserved from the Nazis for being "decadent," i.e., not following the strict lifestyles and traditions demanded by orthodox Judaism. That lack of sympathy seems to have been a huge sore point between Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews since WWII.
