It probably all started as a way to keep some balance between the sexes, because after all those thousands of years of patriarchal suppression women still end up cracking the whip, while men take the trip.

No... not in the way you're thinking, anyway... we're not talking collared subbies here... just that the wifey give over control to her hubby, and she supports his decisions. Never quite had that relationship myself, as I usually hook up with pretty feisty women, but it seems to work well for several couples I know.

This is just another tenet of religion which proves that man created god in his own image. Every personality trait attributed to god is so obviously one that a great Hebrew king must possess. He is all powerful. He is fair with his subjects, but ruthless with his enemies. He demands complete fealty. Any deviation is punishable by death. This includes every man who crosses him as well as his wife(s), and their children. He has no problem with murdering neighboring tribes and taking their land, because, after all, it's not for the money, it's for His glory.
