I ran across this video of one of this year's Eurovision Song Contest contenders.

As...stunning...as the visuals are, it's the tune itself that is messing with my head.  I checked my calendar and yes, this is 2011.

I will never understand Europe.

Europe, on the cutting edge of 30 year old music. With hats.

You're missing the point; it's an unofficial requirement that Eurovision entries be as cheesy as possible.

This trainable tard competition apparently began in 1956 and, assuming the ear bleach I heard from it 10 years ago is any guide, has always sucked.

And this year's winner is, (*Drum roll* boom boom boom boom) Ell and Nikki of Azerbaijan!  Come on down kids and collect your wheel of cheese!

I have more respect for the 2006 (Lordi from Finland) and 1998 (Dana International from Israel) winners, because they wrote their own music.

Edited to replace link for the winning 1998 song by Israeli tranny Dana International.

Loathe as I am to agree with a self-hating neegrow; fnord is correct, Eurovision has always been right out on the saccharine edges of pop music.

There was a rumour a couple of years ago that Morrissey was going to write the British entry. Now if that had happened and it had been performed by someone like Duffy (or Petula Clark, or, god forbid, by the Mozz himself) it would have taken the thing up a whole 'nother level.
