The Euro Union navy who patrol these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties (!)
All explanations are in Russian with a single exception of when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat." All conversations between the commandos are in Russian but the pictures speak for themselves.
The soldiers freed their compatriots and the tanker. The Russian Navy Commandos moved the pirates back to the pirate vessel, searched it for weapons and explosives, then left and blew it up with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it.They used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were legally hanged with no lawyers or court proceedings required. Perhaps from now on, Russian ships will not be targets for Somalian pirates.Other nations might take note. "Без суда и следствия". Смотрите, девочки.

I think they should have put a couple of "survivors" ashore to spread the word.

The pirate gangs have computers; they will see this.

Can we do this to Nigerian scam artists too?

I'm glad that your average Russian soldier is trained to say "What the fuck is that" in English. I doubt that we teach such good Russian to our soldiers.

I see 9 underfolder AKs and a could of TT-33 pistols. That's pretty good fishing gear, even if you only use it while on shore leave. But it's pretty light weight if you are planning on tackling a supertanker.

This is a sham. Why would they speak any English? Made for the internet.
This is a fishing vessel... Why do you lie to me....

Bullshit.

I've seen this video before.  Even if this was a real capture of pirates, there is no evidence that the pirates actually went down with their ship.  If someone speaks Russian, there may be some clues in the dialogue.

Well, I doubt that Somalis study much Russian and Russians probably don't speak Arabic (though they should, with their history of the same kind of trouble that we have gotten ourselves into). Everyone speaks English.

But I agree that there isn't anything but the comments above that tell you that there were people on the boat when it was blown up. I just can't figure out why the Navy didn't use it for target practice. Gunners always need more practice.

One should never use a sledge hammer when a fly swatter will do the job, besides 5" rounds are expensive and Russia is broke.

My understanding is that no pirates have been summarily executed by handcuffing them to the vessel and blowing them up.

Indeed.
