You want to make people laugh? Tell a funny joke.
You want to creep them out? Wear strange clothes, lot's of dehumanizing makeup and jump around like you have fire ants in your shorts.
About the only thing that would redeem clowns in my book was if they all banded together and made it a policy to start killing mimes.

Stephen King has fuckall to do with clowns being called creepy. He just capitalized on it.
I think I'd take mimes over clowns. Mimes aren't creepy, just retarded.
Now midget clown mimes....bust out the sniper rifle.

As far as I can tell from the internet, Stephen King did his creepy clown thing in 1986. My first exposure to "creepy clown" was a hot classmate who complained about the decor in her bedroom... clown pictures on the walls. Her mom was a professional clown. It was 1983.
Clowns are inherently creepy.
My current girlfriend is much younger than me and is very attractive. She is also into the performance/theater scene. She has a picture on facebook where she is wearing a big red clown nose. I suppress that memory. Thinking of it completely turns me off and makes me reconsider our relationship. I doubt I can find a more attractive girlfriend... but that picture is utterly repulsive and makes me question everything about her when I think about it.
Clowns are creepy. They just are.
That being said, I *know* some clowns (Barnum and Bailey even) through my girlfriend. They're fine people and I get along with them... as long as they are not being clowns.

You guys have the wrong idea about clowns. They don't tell jokes, that's the job of a comedian. Clowns are just schtick... physical comedy. The makeup is completely unnecessary.
Take a look at this guy.

A clown is a poet who also happens to be an orangutang. You're welcome.
