Sales are up 12% in Chinese restaurants for the first nine months this year, says McDonald's, which won't disclose a dollar amount. But China, where analysts say restaurants are less profitable than those in the West, accounts for a small portion of the chain's total sales, which rose 9% to $21.59 billion last year.

It's interesting that McDonald's hasn't been able to crack the Chinese nut. The Chinese eat out far more often than most other cultures, largely out of necessity. Many Chinese homes still don't have sufficient space to allow cooking at home on the level we do in the West, and there is a much stronger tradition of eating out to socialize there, as well.
